Hot Rod Black paint
« on: March 19, 2010 - 12:52:33 AM »
Hey guys this request is going out to anyone who knows something 'bout auto paint. To make a long story short, I got the green weenie from the guy that painted my Barracuda, he's giving me the run round. The top half of the Barracuda was painted with Hot Hues Hot Rod Black...which is basically a satin black. After about 6 months I noticed that the paint has started to show some streaks. I went down to another body shop & was told that the painter either didn't polish out the paint or used the wrong compound. Also is there a special wax or compound that I could use to fix this. Thank you in advance!!!

I don`t have an answer to you question, but I have been thinking... how do you polish something flatblack and keep it flat...  :clueless:   won`t it become shiny in the end?

Hey Dutch thanks for looking in, the paint in question isn't really flat it's got a little bit of a gloss & it does not feel rough to the touch.

I just did my car in flat black "Hot Rod" black to some.  It is paint not a primer and it has a slightly ruff texture to it.  It will hold up better that just straight primer.

Could you post some pic so we can see what you are talking about?

You don`t polish out satin or flat paint. At best you will make it shiny and at worst you make it look like crap. The streaks could be a number of things-small sand scratches underneath that are showing thru now that the paint has "dried down",the paint "blushing " when they sprayed it which means it was dryinf too fast or slow or too much humidity or a few other things, hard to say without seeing it.Unfortunatly with flats and satins the only way to fix it is too scuff and reshoot a couple coats.

It looks like flat black to me.  There may not be much you can do about it, other than respraying it.  With flat or satin color, it is difficult to sand out scratches and blimishes.  I am not going to leave mine flat black so the little blimishes don't bother me. You do see all the little imperfection even with flat black.

So when I paint my car black, it is going to have to be STRIGHT!

It is hard to tell from the pics but maybe the paint is too thin.  It almost looks like the primer is showing through

To me it looks like either blushing from being humid when it was sprayed or water stains or just fading from the sun, again not a lot you can do with it.Mother`s does sell a Back to Black but it is made for plastic, rubber and vinyl so I`m not sure how it would work for paint.

This link says Gold Class Trim detailer using a thin caot works good, maybe give it a try.
