Need to find pics of roof reskinning.
« on: December 19, 2009 - 04:21:47 PM »
The 2009 challenger is to blam for this post. The search engines are so clogged up with images of the new challenger it make google searches impossable. I am looking for an old thread where someone reviewed and showed images of their roof reskinning. I was not sure if it was posted here or somewhere else but a few months ago I remember seeing this on a website. Any clue :dunno: ?

I reskinned mine, almost 2 years back. Might check my restoration post, see if the pics are still there. Long Term Project. If not there, let me know and i might be able to dig some up.

Hey, thanks. Sadly all the images have been removed. That would have been exactly what I was looking for.

Here are some from one we just recently did. I have the finished pictures on a different computer and can post them if you need some thing else.
The roof panel fit like a glove no problems at all.
As you can see we had to do some structure repair before installing the top.

Thanks Dave that is great. Lets me know what I am getting into. As for CudaDude - that was the one I was thinking of. But if anyone has more pics please feel free to post. i am using this thread to show my fab guy what he is in for! OUCH!!

Dave, how bad was the roof before you pulled it off? Was it really bad? Mine is broken threw in the middle front and rear about 4-5 inches ea. and has a great deal of bubbling under the vinyl. I hope it is not this bad but knowing my luck this will be the most $$ thing I have to do to this old lady.

There was holes along both windows and sides so replacing was the best way.Other than alot of welds to drill roofs are one of the easiest panels to do. They are put on top of the quarters. Here are a few more pictures.
After the roof is removed you will probably find at least some scale rust to deal with.
A good cleaning and some POR-15 or Rust-bullit works well here.
We also replaced the windshield pillar post and did some under side structure repair while the roof was off
We will be replacing the firewall ,cowl and engine comp panels soon also.

Thanks everyone for the pics and info here. It has came in handy for me so far too.
Dave, (farmboy) and anyone else who has structural pics and how they went about fixing it would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!
And how did you weld the roof and roof rail moldings on over the por15?
You cannot weld on por15 can you?
Thanks in advance for any help all

Thanks fellas. Appreciate the info

Yea ntstlgl1970, I'm always keeping an eye on that madmans thread. He's on his own planet and I've yet to accumulate enough talent to venture to it yet  :walkaway:

Thanks Mike, I just skimmed through your thread. I will go through it entirely when I get home from work, (I'm on break).
Just skimming over it I have to say we share twins as far as Challys go
I am doing......or should I say "trying" to do the same thing. Your pics are definitely going to come in handy

It seems like a lot of the pics/threads I've seen are mostly.....
pic#1 rusty panel
pic#2 new panel welded on
Don't get me wrong I could not be more grateful for the restoration section. Hell, I remember when we didn't even have that section.
I guess I am just looking for a few pics and info on how the side structure pieces were made with the groove for the drip rail moilding.... The prep underneath before it get welded etc...
Por15 it, then just grind small patches to bare metal where the spot welds are going to be??
I have done quite a bit already without knowing wtf I am doing, but I just want to make sure that the roof/ structure is as sound as possible. I DO NOT want to do this again in three years  :pullinghair: :stomp: :banghead:

Thanks again guys for responding

Jeff, dont POR 15 where you are going to weld. I used weld through primer under the drip rails then Por around the rails after they were installed (will post pics when I get a chance). I installed the drip rail trim to locate the rails, tacked them in then puddle welded the rails after removing the trim.
