shelf speakers bass response
« on: March 16, 2010 - 05:38:13 PM »
Now I'm using the car a lot I'm really glad I bothered to sound-proof it so I can actually hear the stereo, even cruising along at 75 it's pretty good.  The only problem is I am getting very little bass from the rear speakers.

I have some smaller 2 way speakers in the foot wells, but they are not intended to be bassy anyway.

Under the parcel shelf I have a couple of clarion units, about 7 inch, they should be sounding better than this.  I am wondering if the problem is that there is nothing behind them.  I mean they are open to the trunk area behind.

I was wondering if fitting some kind of enclosure behind them might help?  Like so they have a cabinet ?

Any ideas?

The system is MP3 through a 40 Watt Kenwood radio/tape deck.  It's plenty loud enough, even though the only thing I paid for was the speaker wires :icon16:

6x9s in the parcel shelf are the norm...building properly sized enclosure should stiffen the base.

I added a 10" sub & amp that made a big difference..  Planning on mounting it to a board just behind the back seat & building a shallow wide enclosure to save trunk space.

Yeah, I thought about using a sub but I'm pushing the family's muscle car budget a bit at the moment as it is  :clapping:

But these Clarions are reasonably good kit - they should thump it out a bit.

When I sound-proofed I left the trunk untouched and concentrated on isolating the passenger cabin.  I even foam filled the sail panels to close it off.  It worked well.

So, I already closed off the rear seat from the trunk with fibre board and sound deadener, which would make a good mount for a trunk based sub if I made a cut-out into it.

Just think maybe I don't need to if I can get my Clarions to bump better.

It's not a big deal - the sun has been shining the last few days and I've got a 'cuda on the road.  The stereo is a comparatively small concern.

I have some top of the line 6X9's in the back of mine. I also added an aftermarket amp back there, which is what I think you will need to do.

I'd try the 6x9's in an enclosure of some sort first, should thump ok.  I got this in the trunk, made with left over plywood and some walmart carpet.  Couple of 10's on top.

If it helps, I eventually put my hand in my pocket and bought some 6x9 JBL GTO series 100W/ch speakers and I am very pleased with them.

As far as I am concerned they are plenty bassy enough without an enclosure behind.  I was reading up on it and apparently the key thing about an enclosure is that it  separates the front wave from the back wave.  Seing as I sound-proofed my cabin from the trunk I figured I had already got that.

These fellas go louder than I can stand without distorting and they were not expensive so for me that's a result.

Tom,

How did you secure the enclosure to the car?

Friction, I fit the plywood box tight and then added carpet.  It hasn't moved at all, I've been to the track and done some pretty bad donuts and it hasn't moved.

I guess you cold add a bracket from the spare tire lug in the middle there to mechanically secure it.  AMybe I should .LOL
