weird PS problem
« on: April 10, 2010 - 07:23:44 PM »
Beautiful day today here in southern Indiana. Great day to get the Challenger out and shake it down some more.

Drove my daughter to soccer practice, then decided to run across town to check out a car show.

Everything was fine until I left the car show. Then I noticed the power steering seemed over-boosted when I turned to the right. A slight turn to the right would almost yank the wheel out of my hands.

Steering to the left is fine and the car runs down the road straight.

The car has a quick ratio pitman arm, and supposedly has a firm feel steering box.

Reading through the FSM, I don't see this symptom described. Closing thing I see is "car leads to either side" which suggests the valve body is out of adjustment.

Am I on the right track? Is this something that can be remedied with the gear in the car and no special tools?

the control valve on the top of the steering box needs to be adjusted so the pressure is balanced , loosen the 2 -1/2 bolts on the unit on the top of the box where the return line connects & tap the valve up or down a little to even the pressure

Yep. I read through the FSM and got the gist of it.

Wondering why this would suddenly flair up though.
