Things to look for
« on: April 30, 2010 - 08:24:02 AM »
I'm buying a 72 Cuda in the next couple of weeks. I've seen the car a few times and the paint, interior and engine compartment all look good. Is there anything that I should be on the lookout for when I do a really close inspection like rusty shock towers, specific frame rust that only happens on Cudas and things of that sort? I've been playing with Chevy stuff for 20 years so I know what to be on the lookout with them, but Mopar is a whole new circus for me.

Check out the firewall/cowl area and around the back windows. Use a flashlight and inspection mirror if you have too to check holes and nooks. Also as you mentioned do a good check uder the car. A lot can be hidden underneath while the body/paint may look good. Frame rot can be a major repair. Hope it all pans out and is a nice car for a good price!! Keep us posted!!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll be checking out the car again tomorrow and I'll get pics.

I took a close look at the car today and everything that was suggested looked pretty good. It does have a little rust under the vinyl roof, and there's some bodywork to be done on the top of the passenger side quarter and the hood, but nothing I haven't handled before. I'm looking for a project, so even a little welding/bodywork is no problem. The fender say that it's a 'Cuda 340, but the owner is positive that there's a 318 in it now, and judging by the 2 barrel carb I tend to agree. The interior is perfect, with black buckets that don't have a mark on them but the dash needs a new skin on it. I don't know if the shift knob is stock or if somebody thought it would be cool, but it's a small piston. I'm thinking of pistol grip anyway, so if it isn't stock it's going onto the garage wall. We agreed on $10,000 and as far as I'm concerned it's worth it because I haven't seen another on in Puerto Rico since I started coming here 3 years ago, and I've been to ALOT of car shows since then.

Forgot to mention it has a console as well, not just a shifter boot on the floor. I don't know if that's important, but it seems to be important on Camaros
