383 stamp location
« on: April 08, 2010 - 06:28:30 PM »
Hi guys,  isn't the stamp on a 383 on the drivers side near the bottom by the oil pan?  Couldn't locate mine yesterday and was trying to see if it was a numbers matching motor.  Thanks

Look on the passenger side.

The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

B/RB BIG BLOCKS AND HEMIS
The first letter is the year code, followed by the engine's displacement. Hemi engines have an "H" after the year letter and before the displacement (as in this example), while truck blocks have a "T" in this location. Engine displacements before 1965 may have a digit missing: 36=361, 38=383, 41=413.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This line contains the build date and what number engine that was built that day.
• The first number is the month (or a 4-digit 10,000 day calender date).
• The second number is the day of the month (or a 4-digit 10,000 day calender date).
• The third number is the build sequence for that day. This example engine was the 6th built.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The last line carries any secondary information pertaining to the build of the engine. Any symbol or letter on this line had a special meaning. This example engine has an A (oversize cylinder bores), P (premium fuel only) and a small diamond (oversize tappets).

The following is a list of letter codes and their corresponding years. The year always precedes the engine displacement.

Mopardave,  the stamp near the distributor that you show in the pic will have the last digits of my cars vin to verify if it's the original motor or not?

No, they won't.

Look on the passenger side of the block like Cody mentioned. Look for a raised pad about 3" long, the partial VIN will be stamped there if it has one.

(assuming it is a post 1968 block)

I have a feeling Dave may not have read your whole question.

You can check your transmission also while you are under the car. Passenger side again;

Automatic - look on the bellhousing.

3 or 4 speed - look on the side of the gearbox.

Hey, guys

I just bought a rebuild 1966 383. There are no stamps on passengerside boss just driverside with a lower case t. Dave mentioned T is for truck so they put 383s in trucks in 1966.

Thanks,
Shane
