Sounds like you need more than a map!  OOooh, I'm tryin' to be nice....."smoke rolled everywhere" and "wires front to back totally burnt" don't really describe the question you're trying to ask.  I'm _afraid_ you got it right when you said "replace the whole wiring system".  The first thing I would do is get a factory wiring schematic, which you would find in a factory sevice manual, for which there are numerous online sources.  I also found several sources in "Hemmings Motor News", find it any good bookstore magazine dept.  A fella named John Anastasio does simplified diagrams with the circuits in different colors, which can _really_ help!  get him at: www.classiccarwiring.com.

Or, if it's in good shape, other than the wiring you fried, just tow it to my house and leave it!  I'm due for a good long project about now.

Seriously, wiring can be a pain in the a**.   Lots of times it's easier to replace than to repair, but replacement harnesses don't come cheap!  Good luck!!!

If it's just a problem in the headlight circuit, those wiring harness's are available. I know Year One sells them. Heck, it could have just been one of the wires made contact with the body because the insulation dry rotted, or wore off.

Another thought... The "front" wiring harness has a fused linkage in it. That comes right off the starter relay, I believe. Then it goes to the bulkhead. You might want to see if that was fried.
