4 Speed Differences

Is there a sb 4 speed and a bb 4 speed? My challenger id tag says it has a heavy duty 4 speed! Will this handle a 440 with around 400 hp? Its currently running a 318!  :aussie:

Your trans will handle the power, no problem.

There is an important difference though.  The front bearing retainer is smaller in diameter on the small block, so it will not align the trans to the clutch.  This can be corrected by replacing the retainer with one used on big blocks 4 speeds that use the 307 input bearing.  It has the larger outer diameter.  You can also correct it with the adapter ring that comes with Lakewood blowproof bellhousings.

Thanx Changin gears. Im happy that is the case. I wasnt sure if i should just look for an auto or not! As i want to keep the box i have :) Im just gathering imformation so i can plan my big block transformation  :burnout: :2thumbs:  :aussie:

Better inspect to see if you have the original 4 speed.  There is a part number stamped on the pass side of the 4 speed main trans housing that should match some of the VIN number.

Yes , there are basically 3 4 spds , the light duty which is stronger than virtually any other 4 spd has the smaller 307 front brg & 4.35" diameter front brg retainer & 23 spline input shaft , then the big block 4 spd with the 308 front brg & the 4.80" front brg retainer also with the 23 spline input shaft , then the HD 4 spd , also with the 308 brg & 4.80" retainer & 18 spline input shaft
