i cant engage reverse with my shifter?

i cant engage reverse with my shifter.  if i disconnect the linkage the arm on the trans will move fine.  i cant get the lever on the shifter itself to move, what am i doing wrong?  yes i am a noob, and i know this is a completely stupid question but i am serious... what is the shift pattern?  the only pattern i can find is: left, up and down is 1-2, and stright up and down is 3-4.  but i cant find reverse, i can see from the shift indicator that its a dogleg pattern but my shifter wont do any farther over to the left than the 1-2 shift.   my shifter is an e-body, and the trans is an OD.  please help

The 3 little shifter arms that extend down from the shifter have to be all lined up when the linkage is attached and in neutral.  There is a little hole in each of them so when they're aligned you can slide an 1/8" drill bit through all three.  It sound to me that the linkage for the reverse is set too long or too short so the shifter arms (dogs) aren't lined up and can't go from 1-2 to reverse (left and up on a normal 833)

Your shifter might be fine and you just need to pull a little harder to the left to find R.

I had a few issues myself with my first Mopar 4-speed experience, including finding Reverse.

Try starting out in 3rd (with 4.10 gears, it doesn't feel all that odd) shifting throught the gears and going "Where's 3rd???" 
I'm glad my neighbors aren't gearheads.
