need carb help. solex non mopar... anyone?

hey guys,
can`t seem to get any decent answers on this side of the planet 

yesterday I picked up my new daily cruizer... a 1972 bmw 518.
after the 100mile trip home it started to idle bad and I smelled fuel, so I pulled the aircleaner to find the top of the carb missing a few bolts and leaking bad.
I took out the remaining bolts to check the gasket and found some loose parts in the fuelchamber 
A brass tube where the #9 screw goes in ( don understand why it is not noted as a part in the drawing    )   and a 4mm  ( 0.157" ) ball  which also is not in the drawing... 
I can`t seem to figure out where the ball goes.  It fits nicely on top of the tube, but there is nothing to hold it in place, or it could be placed underneath the tube, but I don`t understand what it would be doing there... Once I put it under I won`t be able to get it out unless I pull the carb and hold it upside down.

since this is my only car at the moment and I need it tomorrow to get to work, I`d really appreciate any help...

Usually a round check ball or short piece of solid brass stock is used at bottom of accelerator pump "tube", so when accel pump plunger lifts the ball or rod is lifted and fuel enters the tube, then when pump plunger drops the ball or tube seals the fuel inlet opening to the tube, and the fuel is sent to the accel discharge nozzles.   Not sure if this fits your solex.    Sounds like someone tossed the carb together but did not know what they were doing.   Most carb kits show all the parts and locations, sounds like yours does not.  Is another brand of kit available?

From the sounds of it you need to get a second complete carb.   I recently bought a rebuilt carb for my 76 Datsun B210, was a Holley rebuild so I thought it would be an excellent product....was a total piece of crap, parts missing, almost no screws tightened at all, jets loose, you name it and it wasn't right.  Ended up using it as a parts carb after finding yet another carb.

With the troubles your having I'm sort of impressed the engine is running at all.

got the car running again yesterday. I was very suprised when I saw that carb after I got home after that trip... when I went to see the car and test drove it it was running very instable and high rpm`s at idle. I already thought it was pulling in false air and wanted to fix it as soon as I got home. It was kickin in drive and killing the tranny. Can`t beleive it was running at all with all those parts laying in there and the top falling off...
the ball belonged under the tube and probably fell out when the carb was upside down somewhere in its life...
The car is running nice now but I will check valve play and timing before adjusting the carb to get it perfect.
still don`t undestand why that ball was not on the drawing.

  nice post and replies here I really like it now I know what to do if I have the same problem like dutch I also have a bmw car and I'm a 1st time car owner so I'm not sure about bmw parts. I also don't know where to ask if I will be having the same problem thank GOD there are forums like these!!!
