Leaking rear window? ! ?? @#$!!
« on: April 24, 2010 - 02:45:59 AM »
I have a leaky rear window.   I have not dug into this issue yet other than pull the package tray out. I saw no signs of rust, and the trunk looks good.  It's an orig CA car also.

Anyway whats the best fix for this?  I have not even looked at pulling the rear trim off, and I'd hate to silicone it up and trap more water in there.

You already know that answer. Safest way is take it out and reset it in new butyl or urethane. Better now than after damage is done. :-\
If I cant fix it, it's broke

The most common problem with them is a rotted bottom corner or two in the lip. You can reach up in there & feel for holes from the trunk.

It feels good under there.  I don't think its rusted yet.  I did pull the trunk mat out and it was soaked and the water is rusty.  I sus[ect surface rust because the bottom side of the trunk floor is un finished bare metal and its fine.  They forgot to spray undercoating under the tank.

I'll take the car to a glass place and have them reset the window. I don't want to mess with that its probably best to leave that to an expert.  I guess after 40 years the seal goes bad.

Now I guess I need to figure out where the waer is coming from thats leaking in under the dash somewhere.  Front window or somewhere in the firewall area?

It was sprayed after the tank was installed.

Ok I am going to call a windshield guy out to pull the window.  Do I need to buy the seals?  Also do I need any clips for the rear window trim?

The seal is just a roll of butyl or a caulking tube of whatever is in use nowadays. Either way, the glass shop will supply it.  :2cents:

It's a steel multi-use clip. If they are all there now, you will be alright. I suppose it might be handy to have a couple spares when the shop is changing the window. If they break one or find one that has rusted too much to reuse, they probably won't have a replacement handy.
