Starts in run position

I am working on the Polara and am having issues with what I think may be the relay. The car will not start, sputter, pop or anything until I release the key from the start position. With the key in the run position, it would figure that the car would start if I cross the terminals on the relay but nope, nothing.
I have gone through the electronic conversion wiring and all that checks out.
Any thoughts??

Have you checked your ballast resistor?

I'm thinking the power wire for Start is not getting juice, could be the switch or any of the wiring from there to the ECU.

Resistor is new, will check power @ start and run terminals and post results :2thumbs:

so the car is not cranking in the start position ? Is the power going to the start relay , is the relay clicking ?
Or is it cranking & not firing until the key is released ?

I think he means it fires when he lets off the cranking, but it won't start if he shorts the starter relay with the key in "run".

Probably the coil is not getting +12v when cranking.

Try running a (temporary) live feed to the coil positive terminal, - if it will start like that then the problem is lack of continuity on the "start" circuit.

Don't leave it running long like that though.

Only thing that doesnt check out the same is the voltage at the ballast, in essence, the voltage seems backwards. I'll try to explain, on the Cuda it reads 10+ on the blue wire side and something like 8 or whatever on the other side.
The Polara reads exactly opposite, Blue at eight and the other at 10+. I switched the connectors around knowing full well that it wasn't going to change anything, and it didn't :clueless:

your description of only starting when releasing the key from the start position, is classic symptom of having bad battery cables / grounds.make sure of your grounds everywhere ,,especially at the ignition module and also check ignition switch to dash harness connection

do you have a spare electronic box?   Your box is the 4 wire right?When you turn the key on, your power is going through the resistor and over to the electronic box. Even on run or crank. A single ballast resistor usually has 2 wires on one side and one on the other.The 2 wires is for cranking and running as I recall.

Yeah, I need to go over all of the grounds, the BH and all of the other general crap that goes along with these starting problems.
 I guess I'll pick up a cheap blue from O, I want to get the thing outta the carport so I can open the friggin doors , I gotta go Dukes style :roflsmiley:

the blue wire should be 12v when unplugged from the ballast , the brown wire should be 12v when cranking , the wire with the brown is the coil feed & should be 6-8 v to the coil except when cranking , usually if it fires in the run position it is a bad ballast

You can't just go measuring volts on the brown side, first you have to ground the coil -ve to get a meaningful reading.

Did you try running a live to the coil like I suggested ? - it's a quick easy way to narrow down the problem (assuming it is just one problem).  And you can run it long enough like that so you don't have to go Dukes style any more - LOL

Got a cheap blue box from O's and now have burly spark across the board :2thumbs: Gonna give it a tune up and see if it'll fire up and move.
