Auto trans for daily driver?
« on: April 07, 2010 - 05:53:15 PM »
Hi everyone,

I would like to have a E-body, 727 auto as a daily driver, I'd never driven any old car with auto trans before. My question is these car-727 auto- shift as smooth as modern car?

Is the 318 good enough for a daily driver?  I dont want to spend alot money on the car then find out its good for car show only!

Thank in advance

The 727 or the 904 will shift as good as a modern car in my opinion  and the 318 is a very good engine to start with.  A lot of the 318's came with the 904 which is a smaller version of he 727.  The 727 is stronger.  Both can be modified to shift harder if you want them to.  Hope this helps   :2cents:

As said the 318 is a good strong motor, it is really a rocket in disguise and with the usually 904 fitted behind it is very reliable. The 904 & 727 gave a good solid change and can take a lot of punishment. If you decided to play around with the motor for more performance it responds very well and the auto's still won't give you any trouble.   :2thumbs:

And you can add a GV overdrive to get a little more economy on the highway (it can be switched off when desired, too).

My only complaint is I've driven MANY automatic e-bodies and they never downshifted properly automatically when you slow down (like down to 15mph) and accelerate.  Not sure if it was always just kickdown adjustment or what, but they all seem to do that.  If I wanted to downshift, I had to do it myself.

GM cars I've driven, their autos always downshifted.

318-autos are great daily driver cars.  Not too bad on gas and lighter than BBs.  Of course, my preference is to row the gears myself; even for a DD.
