Looking for advise. Lucas gear oil? Valvoline vr1 oil?
« on: April 21, 2010 - 10:46:14 PM »
I just had my transmission rebuilt  and was wondering if the Lucas gear oil 80-90w is a good product. I also heard Valvoline VR1 10-30w is a good oil to use also for my engine that has been rebuilt and now has about 1k miles. Any help or advise is apreciated. What about synthetics also? I have a 440 mag stock build, and 833 tranny. Summer in S.W. NM reaches around 110 at times.

Just as a note, the lucas oil additive, when put into freezing weather and left to sit for a while, then started and turned in the little display, foamed like mad.  Worst looking crap I have ever considered putting into my engine.
Of course, you might not ever have freezing weather but thought it worth the note.

I would use a non syn 80-90 gear oil in the trans
the engine is tough , there really is no good oil to recommmend for flat tappet cams anymore & EOS additive has been discoed too
The New Z-Alt oil or Brad Penn or similar oil designed for older flat tappet cam engines is what you need , I would not use synthetics until you have 4000 mile on the engine to make sure it is properly seated in & you still need an additive with synthetic oils as the Zddp & Scuff lube has been removed
