Occasional 2nd gear issues
« on: April 26, 2010 - 08:23:59 PM »
Is this a worn a833 synchro?
Sometimes it pops out of 2nd immediately after shifting, almost like I missed the gear, and sometimes it wants to grind into it, but most of the time it's fine. I dont shift hard, or above 3-4000 rpm....hardly ever, though I know the prior owner did run it at the dragstrip in eastern NY a few times!
Thanks.

A stiff shifter boot can cause this while drive under a light or no load.

Funny you mention this because we just went through the exact same problem with our Super Bee.  For the most part we had to hold the shifter in second while cruising/coasting, or it would pop out.  It finally gave up the ghost completely and would not go into 2nd no matter what.  It turns out the previous owner tore it up pretty bad.

fill it up with redline MTL, worked wonders for my rough shifting a833.
used to grind bad going into 2nd, and would always pop out. now it's smooth as, even on downshifts, and hardly ever pops out.

a worn syncro can cause it to pop out as well

Same thing is happening to me (see my current thread).  Is there something about the syncro for 2nd that is different from the other gear syncros that makes it go out sooner?  Seems like all the problems are associated with shifting into 2nd.

It's the one that sees the most action, especially at higher RPMs, so if a shift is missed or flubbed, it is most likely when going into 2nd.  My friend told me some other stuff about it when he did the work on our Bee, but yes, the 2nd gear synchro is the most likely to go.

You also should check the shifter rod alignment. Although it sounds like a synchro to me as well, the mis-adjustment of the shifter rods can also cause this problem.

no matter how slow you are going you will always shift into second ,it is the most & hardest used gear
