The basic rule for flushing a transmission is this: If you haven't done routine service of the trans fluid over the time that the vehicle has been in your possessin, DON"T DO IT. Because the fluid is a high-detergent, low-viscosity oil, it WILL scrub out whatever is still holding the transmission together, when you remove all the old stuff, and replace it with new. If you have serviced it with simple drain-and-fill or filter-drop techniques, you should continue to do so. If you have not had it serviced, it's due for its first service, and you use a quality, exchange-style system, it will do fine, and have no issues after service. Continue to service the tranmission in this manner, and enjoy long service life. Because of the design of the fluid circuits in an automatic transmission, the exchange of fluid is actually very close to 1:1, and the only intermixing occurs as the fluid is forced through the torque convertor. The process only works if the cooler circuit is where you tap in, and only if the pump is allowed to run the fluid through the cooling circuit. If you flush a 727 while it runs in "Park," you will not be able to flush the convertor, the pump will not circulate the fluid through the cooler circuit, and problems will immediately result. There is nothing inherently wrong with the process, but it does require an understanding of the process and the equipment. It also requires knowing when NOT to recommend the procedure.

727 & 904's should be run in neutral if idling for any length of time so that the fluid does circulate. Make sure that park/emergency brake is on securely.

I agree with the idea that if they've never been serviced, bet to leave them alone. I had done a service on the Hyundai at about 50,000 (and did have it flushed, for a cost of $75, BTW). When the guy brought it up I was ready to go ahead and say yes...until he very casually mentioned the $235 figure. As I said to him, "Not ever going to happen."

I did a flush on my 727 from my Dodge Ramcharger.
For some reason, Water probably, my fluid was black.  Probably about
1500 miles past a rebuild.  After the flush, she still runs great.
Ran fine before but the color scared me!
One of the mechanics said it wouldn't drive out of the shop.
Again, still running to this day.  It's been two years since the flush
and the tranny works fine.
I will probably do it again in the near future.

I talked to another place today that quoted me $95. Much more reasonable. I have no problem with the first place wanting to pay for their machine...just not all with one customer.

'Cuda Hunter if your oil was black that is usually from band or clutch material slipping and the oil starting to burn. Changing the oil can sometimes extend the life of the trans but there is no guarantee's. If water gets in the oil goes a pink foamy color and will usually fail very quickly.   :working:

'Cuda Hunter didn't tell you the whole story yet. Black was the FINAL result, and I bet it was pink and foamy before he decided to check it. Ifhe tells you everything, then you might not be so quick to assume only slippage. Black actually is the color you see when you cook the fluid, and the reason tha you see it in a trans that is slipping, is because the heat has killed the fluid.
