73 Cudaa rear valance attachment
« on: April 26, 2010 - 07:39:32 PM »
I removed my rear valance the other day. It was kind of rigged together. It had a mix of different types of screws and nuts and bolts. I have a new AMD valance and attaching kit I bought. The kit has 6 phillips head screws, six j nuts, six studs and six nuts.
I see 2 holes on the rear of each quarter. I would assume that I use the j nuts, studs and nuts in those holes, I see 4 holes (that have j nuts on them) above the valance just below the bumper. I am figuring I use the screws there. Am I missing a bracket(s)? Does the kit have more hardware than I need? I believe I bought the kit from R/T specialties.
Does anyone have any pictures of where everything goes?

2 philips heads go into the sheetmetal in the corner of the quarters, the j nuts & screws go into the 2 brackets at the top, I have bolts but I guess you could use studs & nuts on the 4 lower connections(2 each side) where the quarter folds under the car. will see if I have any pics a little later. Daniel,
i have the brackets. I happened to be working on the fuel tank last night and looked at the brackets. They both are bent towards the passenger side. I am now assuming that they should not be bent in the same direction. Is that true? Maybe they can be flipped? I will have to look into it a little more tonight.

I just took those brackets off of my 72 and they were both bent to the right as well.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

hm,ive got a kit like that going on my car soon as well.but i wonder why the factory used studs and nuts at the end connections at the quarters,i mean you would have to remove first the nuts and then the studs to remove the valance?? wouldnt it be easyer with bolts screwed into the j-nuts. :woohoo:why,is there a thought behind this??or am i thinking wrong :clueless:

The studs probably helped align the valance as well as hold it in place until the nuts could be installed. Not sure if that is the reason for the studs but it seems logical to me.

Pretty sure my kit came with bolts&J nuts, but that doesn't mean it's "correct" but with the tight fit down there I would think studs would be a pain! Rich.
Both my brackets go the same way too, bolts right up!

The 70 only brackets are formed like mirror images.  The left bracket points to the left and the right points to the right.

The 71-74 brackets are the same bracket.  This is why there are two mounting holes on the 71-74 rear valances on the left side where the bracket mounts to.  They didn't bother removing the other hole from the tool and probably figured that they would make a universal tool so the new valance would work on the 70 models too with the longer rear brackets.  This is my theory anyway.

The studs for the rear valance mount are correct.  I think you install the studs onto the valance, then the studs fit into the holes in the quarter panel.  It has been awhile since I installed my valance so I am going on memory here.
