Furlow days
« on: April 28, 2010 - 08:38:47 AM »
The rumor mill at work has it that we are going to be getting furlow days next fiscal year. As if not getting a raise in 2 years wasn't bad enough. Even though my evals. are great the county has no money. That means no raises or even COLA's for another year.  :stomp:

This really blows chunks!!!  :eek4:

Any one else facing this problem?

Dave

I have had to take two furlough days a month for 16 months now!  it equates to an 8% cut in pay.... :swear:

It sure cuts into the funds for the Cuda..... :walkaway:  but the extra days off are nice!

How does the saying go......if you have money to work on your project you don't have the time and if you have the time you don't have the money.

I have to move in a few months. So this was not good news right now thats for sure. The details are supposed to be released today in some big meeting. I guess I really can't complain, I still have a good job. But this is sure bad timing for me.

Been doing that since start of last summer, one day off a week (32 hrs). Plus a 10% pay cut, no 401 K match.  The real biggie is the wife lost her job, there goes 50% of our income.  Oh ya, plus there’re shutting down our lab and moving cross town to another lab.  Glad to see all the stockbrokers and bankers are getting their bonuses, I was really worried about them.

Snowdoggie

I feel bad for the folks who have hit layoffs etc,.,...I am lucky enough to have not seen that ....yet.

That said, and not to start anything.... :villagers:.....but dont hate on the "stockbrokers and bankers".  Most of them are people just like you and me with families etc and are looking out for themselves.

Its a free market and the financial firms paying these guys are in business like anyone else...what the firms pay their people really shouldnt matter to anyone UNLESS they are proven to have gotten their money thru ill means. No one should care except for the shareholders of that company who are, in effect, the ones paying them.

Funny, how no one seems to mind professional athletes and rock stars making millions of dollars.....yet everyone gasps in shock and awe when the news reports how some executiive is making a million bucks a year.

We are all big boys and girls and we could have been a mean old banker or stockbroker , or a footbal player for that matter, if we REALLY wanted to.....we choose our own occupations and directions.....and we are ALL out for ourselves and our security when it comes down to it......why shouldnt a guy make big $$ by being a banker if he can do it well and get paid for it?

Dont jump on the "jealousy bandwagon" that our liberal president and congress has set the stage for.....villifying anyone who makes some money....because the next group classified and condemned as "overpaid" could end up being you.

In the meantime, hope things improve for ya somehow.

I lost my full time job at the end of 2008 and have only had some part time/freelance type work since.  After sending out hundreds of resumes and enduring a dozen or so unsuccessful interviews, I doubt I'll be successful in finding another engineering job at this point and need to go back to school for another degree or figure something else to start over with a new career to make a living.
So having a job but having to take some unpaid furlough days doesn't sound all that bad to me!
The old "I felt sorry for myself for having no shoes until I met a man who had no legs" situation.... :2cents:

Dave,

I'm sorry to hear about this. Are you down in Crownsville now, or is that where you are moving next?

It's always tough to take a cut. Like you said at least you still have the job. This economy touches everyone in one way or the other. Hang in there.

It turns out to be 12 days total. Thats not as bad as the rumors had made it out to be.

Dave,

I'm sorry to hear about this. Are you down in Crownsville now, or is that where you are moving next?

  Mike

Mike, I'm living in Crownsville now. I'll be moving to Severna Park in a few months. So I'm still going to be in the same area.

I just lost my second job in 3 years , so you're not alone . D H L pulled out of the country . Next I went to work for a bus factory that was counting on some big orders from the stimulus package (mass transit) well it didn't happen . Now I'm trying to get a job delivering ice for the summer . 6 days a week , 10 hours a day . I've been unemployed 2 months now and the job is only 5 months , I could use the extra cash and maybe by then the bus co will call me back . In the mean time I'm keeping busy around the house , today I start staining the outside of the house . Just keep your spirits up and hope things get better .  :2thumbs:
