I had a couple of different questions about suspension and figure I might as well put them all in one post lol.

Here we go.

What is the difference between an AAR 'cudas suspension and just a normal barracuda suspension? I was watching a show on TV today and they discussed the AAR cuda and said that it had better handling than the other cudas. I am sure part of the reason is because of tires and the small block motor being lighter, but anything else?

Also I am still considering the suspension I am going to do on my 'cuda. I have been considering the XV stage 1 suspension. It covers all 4 corners and is supposed to improve the handling as much as the stock handling can be improved. So I am content with going with the stage 1, but a little concerned if it will be able to handle the traction requirements I am going to have for the back tires. I am planning on about 500hp out of my motor and probably close to 550 ft/lbs. I'm not going to be taking it to the strip all the time or anything. Maybe occasionally, and I am sure I will want to show up some ricers occasionally lol. But basically can the stage 1 handle launching, or should I upgraded the rear to the stage 2? Which also has me wondering if XV would be nice enought to just send me the stuff for the stage 1 front if I wanted to split them up like that lol.

Well I recall if I can remmember straight, that they had a faster pitman arm ratio, should have front and rear sway bars too same as other options, but I think the pitman, idler arm was for these only.

And yes a small block is about 100-150 less up front depnds on engines etc.

there is a sticky thread on the TA suspensions & a long thread on the XV suspension up grades , you may want to look at the Hotchkiss upgrade for $1500 , the demo cars they had at t he Mats handled great

I have the XV Level 1 kit and am very happy with it so far.  I only have a stock 318 with skinny old tires and I don't plan on drag racing it, so I can't help you there.  You should check out the XV and Hotchkis websites and call them to see what they recommend.  They are both coming out with new suspension options all the time.  I believe XV will split up their suspension packages and sell you components now as well.

And yeah, check out the other threads on AAR's and XV.  Let us know what you learn.  Good luck!

The short answer is the trans am vehicles used higher wheel rates than stock Barracudas. This was acheived with bigger sway bars, t bars, leaf springs, and the addition of a rear sway bar. However, in tune with the era, these increases in rate were no where near modern standards.

With 550 lb ft of torque, there are no suspensions out there that will be able to plant that much power with street tires if your doing a 4500 rpm, dump the clutch style launch. In that regard, the XV L2 is no better than the XV L1, or the Hotchkis, or Cal-Traks, or SS springs. However, if you learn how to finese the launch, then just about anything will handle it.

So in all honesty, I don't think you can do much about improving street launches with regular tires. If your willing to go to a d.o.t. drag tire, you will improve your lancuh ability, but will do so at the expense of lateral capability. If you want maximum traction at the strip, it would definetly be worth investing is a set of slicks, even skinny ones, one some basics steel wheels.
