Where's a good place to get tinted bulbs...
« on: May 25, 2010 - 01:43:17 PM »
...for side marker and lisence plate bulbs.

I replaced my LP light with a non tinted bulb and the lens got pretty hot in a short period of time.  I'm afraid of melting the lens if it continues to get hot.  I also need to replace both front side marker bulbs and dont want to melt these either.

Where's a good place to get tinted bulbs for 1970 E-body?

On a similar note, where is a good place to get replacement side marker light assemblies?  (just the part that holds the bulb, not the part that holds the reflective lens).  My passenger side light is fine, but my drivers side has seen it's better days.  Years of Minnesota winters have left it looking like it was left in a jar of acid too long.  I looked at Paddock and they want about $200 for a complete pair (bulbs and reflectors).

Thanks

Finding tinted side marker bulbs would be difficult, it's pretty hard to find a 1895 (or whatever the bulb number is) to begin with. If you use a rear marker lamp housing in the front, you can retrofit a push in bulb holder that uses a 194 bulb - there are tons of tinted bulbs in the 194 (push in) style. The license plate lamps are 57s if I remember right, I've seen tinted versions at AutoZone. Check around for LED versions of the 57 bulb if you are concerned about heat damage.

Tinting won't change the heat output of an incandescent bulb. Halogens are much hotter but I don't think the come in 194's (that's what is on my '73, not sure if they are the same for '70) Pretty sure the originals were un-tinted. Maybe the wrong bulb? A 6 volt bulb will be significantly hotter.

My lenses used to melt till I went with the small round bulbs for the license light. If you put the bigger bulb in it, that was long and oval like the dome light type, but with a single contact, it got too hot and melted the lens. Never used a tinted, just the clear glass type.

I also found some small 4-LED lights for the side markers. Can't remember where I got them though. I bought them to use inside a pencil type shift light.

Try ebay.
