Honey, I shrunk the T/A!!!
« on: May 27, 2010 - 06:07:08 PM »
My T/A has been away at the restoration shop so long most people I know don't even ask me about it any more.
Well, I showed the doubters, this week I pretty much got my T/A done!  :clueless:

The T/A was moved over a year ago to the media blaster.  I didn't hear anything more about it, but last winter I was talking to a friend of my restorer who was doing some restoration work on my front suspension components as a side job and asked him how my car looked back from the blaster and etch primed.  He said my car wasn't at the shop, as far as he knew, it was still at the strippers!
I'm like, wtf, I paid the stripper up front in June and 8 months later the car isn't back?
I talked to the restorer and he said he thought I hadn't paid and that is why the car wasn't done.  When he heard I had paid, he called the guy and chewed him out.  I guess the guy's health is really going down hill, and my car might be the last car he ever strips.
At any rate, after getting chewed out, he finished the car off, and it is back at the restoration shop.  I haven't heard if my restorer has done anything with it since it was returned to his shop 3 months ago though.

Still being out of full time work, and with my side line work really slow this spring, I am not all that excited about seeing big bills coming from the resto shop, so I have mixed feelings about whether progress is being made or not right now.
The model was much more manageable!  It only took around 3 months of work and cost maybe $60 in addition to the basic kit that I've had sitting gathering dust on my shelf for many years.
I'll be lucky if my real car looks as good as the model when its done!

Absolutely awesome work. I need to start building models again, they are so much fun.

I'll have to take some pictures of the T/A model I made 25 years ago when I was in college to look like my car did at the time.  It has rallye wheels, window louvers, I painted the battery white and black to look like the die-hard I had in it at the time, and I put blue spark plug wires on the engine to look like the Moroso blue maxes I had on it.
Together, the two models will be sort of a before and after (assuming I ever get the resto on the real one done!)
I should put some cragars on my old model to make it look like my car did in high school!
I've built that 1:24 Monogram Challenger T/A kit so many times over the years; the 2 of my T/A, a Sam Posey #77, a Vanishing point R/T, a '71 hemi Challenger R/T, and if I can get ambitious, the next one I will build will be a replica of Dave Waldens OE gold '70 R/T with the blue stripes.

I'm really envious of you model guys... I have two of those kits that I've been meaning to start, but I've never been able to go beyond just basic kit building.  I saw the steering... that's awesome!

:iagree:  I wish I had that skill also. I had to pay to get mine done. It sure would be nice to do them myself but I realize it's best left to those that know how.

That exact Monogram kit is what made me decide 20 years back what #1 dreamcar of my life would be. I was a teeanager and built it as a custom with flame decals and everything included in the kit. It sits behind glass in my living room still these days :)

NIce work you've done there, JH27N0B

Looks real good.  I've been in & out of modeling all my life.  I've picked up a few kits lately I'd like to do, one a model of my 70 RR and another one of my 73 Barracuda.  Both are vinyl top cars, how did you do the finish on yours?  I figured theres one or two tried & true methods, but yours looks really good, and correct for the scale, etc.

To simulate my vinyl top, I first glued some thin Evergreen styrene plastic strips from the rear quarter windows around below the back window to replicate the stainless steel trim.  Then I masked off the model to just expose the top.  I masked off where the "seams" are on the vinyl top and sprayed it with Testors flat black. Then I peeled off that tape and fogged the top with the flat black to give it a rough finish.  Next I gave it a few more coats of flat black, then finished off with a coat of Testors dullcoat.
The seam came out looking pretty good on the passenger side, you may be able to see it in my picture.  The drivers side seam was OK, not as good as I wanted.
I used Bare Metal foil on the trim to give it the polished stainless steel look.
An interesting story on the Monogram T/A model.  When I was 15 and just getting interested in Challengers, I saw a red with white vinyl top T/A drive down my street and park in front of my buddies house down the street. I hopped on my bike and rode down the street to check it out.  It was the first T/A I ever got a close look at!
It belonged to a guy named Scott who was friends with my buddy's older brother.
Not long after Scott got his T/A, he took the white vinyl top off because he hated it.
Monogram Models was located in Morton Grove IL which was just south of my home town.  In the early 80's, they borrowed Scott's T/A to use to develop their T/A model!
As thanks for that, on the original editions decal sheet, they included Scott's license plates Illinois SAS 392.
Apparently Scott's T/A is a standard dash car, I had to scratchbuild a rally dash for the interior of my model because my car has that option.
I still know Scott, and he still has that T/A.  He has been restoring it for a while but recently told me it's almost done.  Even though everyone tells him he should put a white vinyl top back on it, he won't because he still hates the way it looked with that!
No one I know has ever seen an FE5 T/A with a white vinyl top.
On a sad (I'd say tragic) note, I had a phone interview with Revell Monogram models in March for a product manager position.  That sounded like a dream job for me, they were looking for someone passionate about cars and planes past and present, in other words, me!!
When talking to the president of Revell on the phone, I mentioned the big plant in Morton Grove and how I noticed that it got torn down 4 or 5 years ago and now condos have been built there.
He said that they had moved all the production over to China (like everyone else seems to be doing these days), he said at one point they had 650 people working here at the model company.  Now they have 28.  I didn't get the job, but I have to admit I wasn't all that interested any more after I talked to him.  Another long time US company doing their part to destroy the US economy by moving all our jobs to China. :swear:
