The body underside
« on: May 30, 2010 - 01:48:17 AM »
Hey all,

I've been cleaning the underside of the car to get ready for paint. Just some semi-flat black to clean up the look, I don't really want it to be mirror ready. In any case, I've scrubbed with simple green and that worked pretty well until I got to a section that looked the same but the brush was chewing up what looked like grease. So I grabbed a small putty knife and a bunch of what I thought was undercoating easily scraped right off.

This was the case for most of the tunnel and some of the floor pans but not all of the underside was so easy. So now I have a mix of some parts that are smooth metal and others that are rough undercoat. I was wondering if there had been something in the car history that got on the undercoating in the tunnel that softened it up so it came off so easily. I'm not sure I want to do the rest unless it would be as easy. Anyone know of what softens that stuff up? I'm thinking I might just be done at this point unless I can readily do the rest.

Thoughts?

Mineral Spirits will soften/dissolve undercoat & old grease...spray it on let it work a while, wire brush, repeat....may take 2-3 times but it will give up.

Eastwood (one of the sponsors) sells an undercoat remover. I've heard from a few friends that it works real well.  Just thought I would throw that in.
On my car we just cleaned the dirt away from the underside and will put a light coat of undercoat to freshen things up.  I don't plan on putting mirrors under the car at shows anyway lol.

Thanks for the info, I'm not really convinced that I want to remove it all anyway. I'll see what it looks like after I get what I can clean and it dries out.

I used a wire circular brush on a drill, worked well.
