Wobbling Distributor
« on: April 08, 2010 - 11:12:53 PM »
I have a original 340 in a cuda with about 78,000 on the clock.I got the engine running after sitting for at least 10yrs.It seems to run strong with no smoke. The only thing that seems wrong is that the distributor wobbles too much. What problems will this cause with the engine as in running or damage and such. And is there a repair for this and whats involved.I had heard that there was a gear that could be replaced but don't know much about it.I figured that someone has to have come across this before. Thanks Chris

Never seen it but why not pull the dist out--after taking a felt marker to make a line were the rotor and housing line up so you can set it back right where it was.

Once the dist is out spin the shaft and see if it wobbles, if so replace the dist...if not :dunno:

PS..this might have something to do with why the engine wasn't being used all this time!

the bushing can be replaced inside the dist or just replace the dist with an electronic system

Is the distributor wobbling or the distributor cap, could be the cap is not on straight, or the rotor is not down properly. Very strange for a distributor to wobble unless it has been hit.   :2cents:

It looked as though the distributor itself was wobbling.I did remove the distributor and replaced it with another one from a 318 that I had and it doesn't seem to wobble. The other one seems like it has small amount of play. And since I replaced it the car is running alittle better.Although now I think I will need to replace the gasket because oil seems to be coming out around the bottom of the distributor after the engine has been ran for a while and then shut off.Doesn't happen when the car is running. Thanks Chris
