manual steering column
« on: July 19, 2005 - 01:12:10 PM »
I recently bought an e body steering column for a real good price because it had a wood grain wheel on it that I needed for my challenger.  The column is in very good shape too.  At somepoint some body wrote on it "manual column."  Looks like it was sold at a swap meet at some point.  How can I tell if it really is a manual column and are there any differences in columns from 70 - 74?

I know that 1970 columns had a different length shaft.  Short or longer not sure.  :dontknow:  I didn't know there was a difference between manual and power steering shafts?    :eekbig:

I see I didnt know 70 was different.  Since the shaft was a different length what else was different.  Was the steering box in a different spot.  The reason I think there is a difference between power and manual is because I was looking on Tony's Parts and it said power steering columns 110 dollars and add 20 dollars for a manual column.  :???:

Manual colums have a longer shaft as the steering box is shorter , if the lock release is sprung it is a 71-74 column , the 70 was unique, the lock release has no spring & was retuned with a rod to the shifter , also 4 spd & auto columns differ in 70

I see.  So could the 70 be interchanged with the 71-74 since only the lock release is different.  Also how would I tell if I have a manual or power column.  Does anybody have the shaft length on them?

Thanks Chyro.  I try and compare it to the one I have in my cuda and challenger, which are both power steering columns.  If I can get a length out of em I'll post em up here.
