Partly buffing?
« on: June 07, 2010 - 03:14:11 PM »
My newly painted Charger needs some wetsanding/buffing on some areas and I'm wondering if that can be done on certain spots only or do you have to do the complete car? The reason I ask is that I have no experience of it myself but thought of doing the spots that are visible with exessive clearcoat.

You don't have to wet sand the whole car, although, depending on lots of variables, it might show.  I know some people only do the visible areas ie belt line upwards.  I don't see why you couldn't fix a problem such as a run and polish the whole side of the car.  I spent alot of time getting reasonably skilled at wet sanding and polishing and do recommend just going to a pro unless you're willing to spend time and money (tools and supplies) getting good at.  There is also the risk of damaging the paint job beyond repair.

What is the situation you are trying to remedy?  Is it a run in the clear?  Orange Peel?  The main thing about wet sanding & buffing is (when done right) it llevels out all of the paint.  If you paint flowed out really well and there are no imperfections, you can easily just do the one run and get away with it.

If the paint is slick with just a couple of flaws(ie: trash, runs or orange peel) then spot sanding/buffing is ok. If you want a slick finish all over then you should block wet sand the entire car starting with 1500 and end up with 2500-3000 paper. Most all high end paint shops do this as a finishing step for a show car finish. If you dont have any expirence doing this please let a professional do this. One mistake can ruin your paint!!!
