Can somebody explain how to use quickmask?

Thanks for the link, Judy. That is the first good tutorial for quickmask I've seen. Unfortunately, it looks like maybe quickmask doesn't do what I thought it would. Can you give me an idea of how I might go about select a highlight area in a photo and knocking it down without affecting the surrounding areas.

You could use the "Magic Wand" tool to select the highlight and adjust the intensity in ADJUSTMENT select LEVELS. You might have change the "tolerance" in the top menu bar to get the area you want, Try 10 or 20 or 30. Most of what I know is learned by the "knock my head 'til it hurts method", so I know there is the proper way to work the highlights. Sometimes I use the clone tool and work the area until I get the effect I'm looking for. I know I have some notes around here somewhere that addresses what you want to do. I'll see if I can locate them.

I think you and I have the same method of learning. It's served me OK until now  :)

What you described is what I've been trying. The big problem is that the areas I'm trying to knock back are almost devoid of detail, almost a straight 248/248/248 throughout the area. They're small, but obviously they're very bright. I think I'm going to need to try cloning some similar regions to get some texture in.
