T/A Hood Paint Method
« on: June 18, 2010 - 09:17:42 PM »
 Hi all,

I finally got my white fiberglass T/A hood painted, but it didn't turn out as
nice as I had hoped.  The coverage under the scoop wasn't very good, and from
the side it doesn't look right.  I know it must be be difficult to get paint
under there, but I don't remember seeing other hoods look this bad.  I tried to post a photo, but no matter how small I make the file, I get an error for the download folder being full - sorry)

Can anyone recommend a method to get a uniform finish with adequate coverage?
Maybe a touchup gun or airbrush?  Any feedback would be a great help.  The guy
who painted it offered to paint the entire car very reasonably, but I'd like to
ask him to fix this as part of the deal.

Thanks,

Pete

If yours only has overspray under the scoop, then it likely looks prety close to the originals.

But then again, the originals were not molded in white.

Maybe the upload folder will be fixed this year, but I am not holding my breath.

Try using Photobucket for image hosting. You can upload your images there and copy/paste the link from photobucket to here, walla, your image shows up in your post.

Has anyone ever tried using some sort of suction or venturi effect to get paint to go into those tight spots? Spray air out of an air hose past the snorkel and spray the paint into the flow of air?  :dunno:

Yeah,  I think it wouldn't look so bad if the raw hood wasn't white, and if the finish was flatter.  I'll try to post a link to photobucket tomorrow, since I've never used it before, and I'm exhausted now.  Spent an hour messing with the photos before giving up.  Thanks for letting me know the problem is with the download folder, though.

You can also post at www.moparts.com & load your photo there, then link to that thread here.

They NEVER have a full upload folder there.  ;)

I remember a good friend telling me that if you want a uniform finish on a T/A or AAR hood? You have to spray three directions vertical, horizontal and diagnal.

OK, I uploaded a pic to photobucket.    http://i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab315/repo68/166.jpg

It looks a lot worse in the photo due to the flash getting so much light in there, but you should get idea.  The white is not getting covered enough.  Also, there's a shadow where the clear was sprayed.  I hate to complain since the price was so low, but then again I'd like it to look decent.

I have the same white T/A hood too. Mine turned out ok as Barry said over spray under the scoop but no white showing. The underside of the hood they used the  Mopar black textured paint that's used on Jeep roll bars etc... It hide many imperfections and is easy to touch up! LOL
I just took these pictures to show you? Don't mind the dust, she needs a bath! LOL
When using photobucket ( I use it too) click on the image code till it goes blue then right click on it again then copy and paste it here . This way the picture shows up here and not just a link to photobucket

Well, I still can't figure out how to copy & paste the right picture codes.  Nothing seems to work.  Anyway, I pulled the hood out into the light and took a few more pictures.  <a href="http://s875.photobucket.com/albums/ab315/repo68/?action=view&current=P1016538mod23.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab315/repo68/P1016538mod23.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket">[/url]

Thanks for the pics.  I guess my hood looks similar, but still has a few areas that are lighter.  I'm not sure if it's worth complaining about.

First select what album you want,then....When you move your arrow over the picture a bunch of "codes? pop out . Go down to the one at the bottom that says" img" ...left click to highlight it ( it turns the background blue) then right click, then select copy.  then paste were you want the picture to appear here on CC.com.

The only one I didn't try!

Thanks for the help!

Anyway, I spoke with the painter and he's going to get more paint on it.  I decided to get the whole car painted too.  Hopefully in 3 weeks it'll be done.

I only have a six-pack scoop on my car...But it is tough to get the paint where you want it. I semi-succeeded.   :sadwavey:
