Pretty sure syncros are on the way out - would like input
« on: June 22, 2010 - 08:51:15 AM »
Hi everyone...

I have a 440 Challenger backed by an 833 (manual of course) 4 speed.
So on the Challenger getting into 1st gear lately has been down right hard.
Also sometimes grinds after driving then putting into reverse.

So here is my question -

I'm on what I would call a budget, because I don't have 2500 - 3000 to drop on a "kit".
Would love a five speed (obviously car is not a numbers match) and with the big block and 3.55 gears is just a little to the point where on the freeway I can't do 65-70 non stop for a long trip.

Should I just rebuild the trans I have to a "stock" spec. ?
Is there something I am missing to "add" a gear to my current set-up? (please don't snicker )
I have heard mention of an OD manual trans from vans and trucks (I think)

Something else you have seen or done?

Thanks for the input

Yes, it sounds as if old age has caught up with your A-833. Although it has some significant differences, the O/D A-833 will fit your car. Check other threads on here for advice concerning a retrofit. It doesn't have the torque capacity of the iron unit, but is good in a street applcation with a milder engine. Rebuilding the 833 is not too difficult, and would be my choice for a fix. Consider that any O/D trans you find will probably also need repair or rebuildng, and the devil you know becomes friendlier. You might also have a clutch adjustment issue, which will usually affect first and reverse first.

 :iagree:
It sounds more like a clutch problem ,if it is adjusted correctly possibly the clutch is damaged & dragging
the OD 833 is a good choice , it will take the power although later year ODs were weaker than the early ones the front brg reatiner needs to be machined down to 4.80 " & you neeed a belhgousing with the 4.80" hole & a minor adjustment on the 3\4 shift rod to clear the crossmember or possibly lenghten it & it is a bolt in
