Another thing I should say - I think it's important that the coil I used was built as an electromagnet (ie. it has a soft iron core) so it sort of projects the magnetic field out from the end.  I don't know if a hollow coil would work, but I suspect not.

re: the little dinky fridge magnets.  I've seen a lot of little plastic cases sold for kids with toy jewelry and the like that use a magnet to hold them closed; those little magnets are surprisingly strong.

Yeah they are strong little fellas.

I also reckon they are not top quality, so I'm wondering if they might "fade" a bit with time.  We shall see.

I didn't really need them so small, the way the guage mounts there's room for something larger.

Just an update - after 2 months and nearly 1,000 miles it is still working fine.

Now I've said that it will probably cack out tomorrow.
