440 help again
« on: June 25, 2010 - 06:14:42 PM »
I cant seam to get the new crate running at all, I changed the distributor  to a msd unit to go along with the 6L box and blaster coil and rewired per instructions' mag pickup type" .

It would at least try to start before but now all I get is cranking and it pops once a rev or so.
Am i right when i set the oil pump gear straight down the center line of the engine then set the bug to point at #1?

It dose have the ballast for the ignition still attached and voltage regulator as well, are they need with the box?
The engine is a 10:1 compression and cam is a 296 duration cam,the ballancer is made by professional products could the timing marks be off?
I can get pics if need
Any help will be a godsend! :banghead:
Thanks

msd runs with out the balist rezister , its in the instructions
the ignition box needs to be removed as the msd doesnt use it
the voltage regulater needs to stay , rember the system runs off 12.5 volts , if the regulater isnt working right, msd  will not work right

are you getting fuel?
do you have spark ?
is the distributer in correct?
is the timming  set to fire the engine (start up not initial)?
are the rocker arms installed right (there is a left and right)
fireing order is 18436572 set #1 top dead center comp stroke point twards #1
you have at least 12.5 volts for start up for msd
these are basics for now

I had the same EXACT prob.     It drove me crazy.     Ill bet money its a poor ground.

Dont trust the ground on the mounting bolts alone.  Run a large gauge ground wire from the MSD to the engine block   Worked for me

is the MSD smaller red wire connected to both the blue 12v run wire & the brown 12v start wire ?? if it is not connected to the brown start wire you will nto have spark while cranking the engine

Thanks guys i am new at this and trying to do it myself after taking her to jackass motors a few months ago where upon looking close at there work found nothing and i mean nothing tightened let alone torqued ,a big dent in my front qt panel and a shop supervisor who seen it all and did nothing.
I will try starting from the ground up. I was fed up on Friday night and went to the lake. I will start hard and heavy tomorrow will start by checking the grounds and wiring first.
Thanks guys I will post if i find or figure it out

Ya have to be careful with a new cam cranking the motor over excessively without getting it started and getting the RPM up for proper lobe break in. :2cents:
