Help with hooking up fuel vapour thing.
« on: June 16, 2010 - 07:50:11 PM »
I have a 70 Challenger with the fuel vapour thing in the trunk. I'm just in the middle of replacing all the hoses to it from the gas tank. Previous owner just looped then off at the gas tank.
My question is I have everything right up to the engine bay. How does it hook to the engine? Just a tee in a vacuum line?  Or something going to the valve cover and a vacuum line would make more sense? or PVC valve with 2 ports?
I have a new gas cap that is not vented so it's holding pressure at the moment when ever I take the gas cap off. At least I know the gas tank is well sealed ( ie. no holes/leaks) ! LOL

Yep CA car. So does someone still make this 3 nipple breather still? After reading what you posted ( Thanks!) I might be asking for trouble hooking it all up? Considering it's been unhooked for years one can assume? Wondering if it's all rusty inside etc..?

They are pretty common, they were used in later years as well. The last one I found went to Poland if I remember right.

I keep my eyes pealed for breathers at Carlilse, if you do not find one there ask me, I am hoping to browse the swap area Wednesday.  ;)

Blow the tubes out with air to make sure they are clear. If you get a whole bunch of rust flakes out of them then be concerned.

found one on e-bay for reference. I have a six pack style fiberglass 4 barrel air cleaner, would I then need a 2 nipple breather ?

That is expensive for one.

Any N95 car had three nipples in '70.

Thanks! I have a Demon 4 barrel, just trying to figure out were to hook up the nipples? One to the gas tank( obviously), one to vacuum? one to air cleaner behind air filter? and whats inside of the breather? is it baffled somehow? do all 3 nipples connect? I'm asking as I am thinking I could make one out of aluminum just to get by till I find one??

I have never taken one apart, but I am quite sure that the nipples are not connected - unless the owner has been to a piercing shop.

I have an extra 3 breather. As far as lines hook up, the big one goes to the air breather even on a 6pk, the second bigger one goes to the carb bowel vent, and the 3rd one goes to the small line going back towards the tank.

I unfortunately cant get to car show, I'm called to Ca and Canda and I have to go. My checks stopped 5 weeks ago, so Im forced to go to work on a hidden limp right now. Got them all fooled but my doctor. I will be in Narrow Virginia Next thurs for 4 days, then start my way over to Trona Ca, and fly to Canada. Kinda sucks right now.

But if someone trys to charge you a bunch for the breather, I will send it to you for the cost of shipping.  I'd ship it for free, but it's tight right now, I can make it tho :2thumbs:

Thanks Alan! I'll keep that in mind! very generous! Thanks! But on a Holley/Demon there is no carb bowl vent, so do I need a breather with only 2 nipples then?
I have no idea what is used to hook it up at the factory so I made this clamp. then bent up brake line and used rubber hose on the ends. Thanks Barry, I did as you said , blew air in them and nothing came out so I assume it's all good!

I never liked the idea of dumping fuel vapors into the engine oil.  When the car is sitting, all the fuel tank vapors are collecting in the engine crankcase, diluting the oil to some extent.  Maybe thats why the switch to charcoal canister with the vapors collecting in the canister.  JMO.
