good 70 transmission?
« on: June 30, 2010 - 02:56:04 PM »
hey guys, im new to this site, i have an 05 mustang and dropped over 10k into it and need something new, so i just bought a 1970 challenger, and its on its way from modesto, CA. to orange, CA. its definatley a project. at the moment it has an automatic, i want to swap it out to manual, forgive me but im not really to knowledgable of a mopar so its going to be a learning experience, i know the 727's are supposed to be good, but i cannot find any manual 727's. do they even make them in manual? whats an old cheap manual transmission that will work with a 440, it currentley has a 318 but my goal is to put in a 440. thanks guys!

They 833 is the factory tranny used from 64-90
the 70 up have the rear shift mount pad for the E body shifter
the A / F body cars use a shrter version of the 833 that will not fit the Chall
the later Dioo trucks used an overdrive version that will aslo work behind a 440 & use 3rd Gear for the OD , if you use the truck version you need a larger belhousing for the 4.80 front brg retainer & the front retainer needs to be cut down to 4.80 from the 5.2" diameter , new belhousings are available for the smaller 130 tooth flywheel from Brewers Performance in Ohio . the 130 tooth fylwheel will accept the 10.95" clutch for maximum laod capabilty of the clutch
