Started on the 72 today
« on: May 27, 2010 - 09:54:48 PM »
I started doing a little work on the body today. The plan was originally to just smooth out the black on the hood etc and hit it with a few cans of tremclad satin black until I get settled here and start on he major stuff. There were a few spots that had bubbled and cracked down to the original red paint so I decided to just get all the paint off the hood and start from there. The were about 10 layers of paint on the hood, along with some major bondo deposits that were up to 1/4 inch thick, so I bought a flap sander for my angle grinder and went on the attack.
I found a little swiss cheese, but other than that it wasn't too bad. A new hood will definitely be in the future, but for now I'm just going to fix up the one I've got. The piece in front of the hood was pretty badly mangled, and I'm thinking I'll need to hunt one of those down too. There were a few poorly patched places near the front of the hood, but once again, I'll work with what I have for now.
It's too dark tonight to get any pics, but I'll get a few tomorrow and post the progress. I might just end up stripping all the pieces one at a time and finding out what I have to replace and what I can just repair. I've found replacement fenders, hood and quarters online on various sites, but I still haven't found the piece in front of the hood. Do they make reproductions of those?

I'll be hitting the hood with primer tomorrow so I can start on the body work and I might even try bondo sculpting the front piece again, although with the shape it's in I'd much rather just replace it now.

Here are the pics I got of the bare hood and header panel
I hit them with tremclad black satin this morning, and wet sanded with 200 grit to get most of the nasty stuff hidden. I'll be hitting it with more black satin this weekend. Then the car can go out in public without me having to wear a mask so I won't be recognized.

Here's a couple of pics after the first layer of black satin. I haven't wet sanded the hood yet because I've been concentrating on the top of the passenger fender. I ended up with a spray bomb with a dribble, so I had alot of drips to sand out on that fender. I'm going to use a block on the hood so I can figure out where I need to fix the lumps and bumps.

I decided to attack Frankendash today since I'm taking a break from engine and body work for the day.
When I bought the car it had a dash cap over some really nasty vinyl with 1/4 foam on the back that was glued to the original dash.
The cap was warped from heat, so I took it off and stuck it in a corner.

The cheesy vinyl underneath wasn't much better.

It was actually stapled to the original dash with regular old staples on the edges and glue holding it everywhere else. (Therefore it became Frankendash)

I was hoping that some really conscientious person had put the cheesy vinyl on top of a pristine dash so it wouldn't get cracked, but no such luck.
At least I can put a new dash cap on it now and make it look good again.

I'm doing all the work with the dash in the car so far, but I'll be taking it out when I do the big rebuild later.

The car is on the road now, so I'll only be doing little projects until I get the Challenger as a daily driver.
I did a pretty poor job of masking when I re-did the black on the hood and fender tops etc, so I decided to hide it for now.

I decided to go with red to break the line because I have AAR stripes and I thought it would tie in quite nicely with the red AAR.
I went right around the car with the red, starting at the headlight pot, followed the black/green seam, and went right around my vinyl roof trim and back down the other side. I'll post some pics as soon as I take some.

A guy I know has a Panther Pink Chally that he built out of three cars. Needless to say he has a few spare parts kicking around. He traded me an unbroken center console for my old mangled twisted dash cap yesterday, and he's looking for door lock actuator bars for me.

Here's a few more shots.
I have to hood done as much as I'm going to now, but I'll be using Organosol when I do the car properly.

It still has a few ripples and dents, but it's good enough for now.
Here's the re-redded AAR logo. I just used red reflective tape until I get either new AAR stripes, or billboards.

It was so faded that I could barley see where the letters went.
Here's a shot of the stripe going around the back of the roof trim.
