I had a factory starter that I could get in/out of a set of cheapy Summit headers without loosening them.

Are you sure that you can't find a path?  If not, start saving for TTI's or Hooker's.

Found the path....came right out.

I got home and tried hooking up the remote starter and was able to make it do it a few times.....replaced the relay for kicks....well, now I have a spare...LOL

Pulled the starter in short order this time.....

So I took the cover off the solenoid.....the washer itself and the "contacts" are dirty, though I dont know if they should be spotless or what....what was concerning was that the compartment seemed to have a LOT of dirt and crust and rust (on the inside of the cover) for a newly reconditioned starter with only a years worth of use and no real rain...

I am just going to go find a lifetime warranty unit  at the local auto parts shop and bite the bullet....not happy but I don't want to be screwing with this right now.  There is a reason its crusty in there...bad gasket maybe?

It sure didnt look all that reconditioned in there to ME.

Is there a small electric motor rebuildinig shop in your area.  My origonal starter has been rebuilt a number of times.  I think it was only like $35 too.  I might try that before buying a whole new unit.  I know you are under a time crunch though.

Went down to Advance Auto and picked up a reman by Remey  ....>$123 with tax and core....Core is worth $35....

The R/R of the starter itself was surprisingly quick....took longer to get the part, jack the car up etc....

I figure I will either try and rebuild the solenoid myself or have a shop do it if its cheap enough and have a spare.

I am NOT happy that DB Electrical's "new" unit had issues after just a year....and we all know these cars are not daily drivers....so really, more like what.....6-7 months, if that?

With the reman unit in, it fired right up....tried the starter a number of times direct at the posts just to test.....no issues. :cooldancing: (Knock on wood of course)

Seems to spin a little faster though I am sure thats just my imagination.

Hopefully that is THAT and is the last issue for a while and the trip to Carlisle will be trouble free....

I may ask some of you guys who are going if we can compare gas caps though....I am still having NO luck.....so till then, when I fill up, no parking on steep uphill grades.... :banghead:

I have a couple of part numbers that might help you. I spent ridiculous amount of hours googling before I found out which cap might fit my -73 Challenger but I eventually found part numbers for stant and gates.

The Stant part number is 10571 and Gates 31670. Both are push lock type caps which were used under the flip top cap. I think that I checked that these same caps should also fit atleast in some year barracudas too.

Forgot to mention that the cap I eventually bought was Stant 10571 and against all odds it did fit!

1:  Ill bet money its not the starter relay, selenoid or starter.  Ill bet the main large plastic wiring harness connector is loose.   Push it in at the firewall, passeneger side

Remember, you can get it to turn over with a remote starter or just conntecing the relay posts EVEN if the firewall conntector  is completley disconnetced

2:  Thats got to a spray bomb (rattle can) can paint job in the area that's wrinkled:  Automotive grade paint has hardener which resists exactly that.  If it is indeed rattle can paint, if you can match, resand, re prime and re paint it:   Just watch spilling gas on it

Not true! I had a Harley painted with DuPont Chroma-base and Chroma-clear with the proper hardeners (I know for a fact because I bought the materials myself) and had the same thing happen to the left gas tank because of a bad fuel cap seal!

Hey guys

Yep, we made it just fine!

Starter was no longer giving me an issue....though once on the way home, the ignition did "stick" once in start.....during a hot start (long crank anyways) so no problem.

No more turn-start-"click" far as I could tell.  Thought that ONCE it may have had that short, half-second delay again, but no clicks, etc. Coupled with the sticky key, that may be related to my actual ignition switch.

Couple days before the trip I repainted the messed up section.   The paint I have is ever so slightly a greener color, so I can see where it blends in to the rest....but doesnt look horrible...just not perfect.

Dont know HOW I got 3rd place...there wasa brown car right next to me that should have gotten something versus me IMHO....but like a couple folks said, it may have been the color....LOL

Hey, I'll take it.  The ride thru the parade/stage was cool!   :)

re: #1 -- well, the issue was that when I would try and crank it would just click really loud at the starter.... when I hooked up the remote to the starter directly, same thing....I called the manufacturer and they said "Yeah its a common problem"....its a bad solenoid...new starter, no issue like that.  Now, the momentary pause thing may or may not have been that issue.....could have SWORN it did that once after the fix but not sure.

re: #2 -- the paint was martin-seynour auto paint and a pro auto shop did the paint job.....i have the can from the paint job.  I had spilled a LITTLE gas on it before and it wasnt an issue....but this time the gas was seeping onto it for a good hour or two.      Man, that hurt when I saw that.
