Best gear ratio W/ Overdrive
« on: July 12, 2010 - 02:25:36 PM »
Going to put a Tremec 5 Speed conversion in a 71 Hemi Cuda. Wondering what opinions are on gear ration. I have it down to 3.73's and 4.10's. With 3.73's 65mph would be 2005rpms and with 4.10's it would be 2204rpm's

2200 RPM's is nothing. Go with the 4:10's.

There are 2 different OD ratios from the Tremec trans, I plan on running a 391, thats what I got with the car.  Might be a little light, but motor should have enough tq to make it ok.

I run 3.73 with a 0.8 OD in a Passon OD. Gives good pulling power right from 60mph if one is too lazy to shift down. 2500 RPM = 80mph. The engine would pull easily 6000 in OD but the body would float way earlier than that speed. Go with the 4:10s and the 0.6 OD

I have the TKO 500 600  with .64 OD and 25.5 inch tall rear tires.  and started out with 3.55 gears
First gear was only good for about 20 feet and then had to shift to second right away.  Almost didnt need 1st gear ?  That was just driving, not taking off with the pedal down...

my focus is on street drivability and I found that to be annoying.

I switched  to 3.23 gears and have been a lot happier with it since.

Tire height is an important factor in the equation.

Yea I think I can about change Dana 60 gears in my sleep.

First gear should be good for about 40mph with 4:10 gears and 26" tires
