440 six pack timing question
« on: July 11, 2010 - 07:17:12 PM »
I plan to start my new engine next week and want to confim the positioning of the distributor/oil pump gear (the slot in this gear that mates with the distributor shaft). When the timing marks on the flywheel "align", should the slot in this gear be pointed down the centerline of the engine?  If not, where should it point.  Also, I think this gear gets pulled to manually  "prime" the oil pump.  Which direction should the tool turn when  priming the pump?  Clockwise or Countercloskwise?

priming the oil pump requires being turned CCW
it doesn`t really matter where the dist/ oil pump drive is pointing but I usually have the slot across the engine which puts #8 spark plug right along the top of the right valve cover , this put 3 of 4 wires on the the right side of the engine for the even # cylinders & 3 of the 4 wires to the left side of the engine to the odd # cylinders
