Spitz, are you saying that there is power at the NSS when the ignition is at START but not when it's at RUN?

Thanks for the help on the picture  :)

If I bypass the NSS the car will start but as soon as the key goes to the start position the engine block becomes hot. I found this out because the oil pressure line (old copper one) shorted out to ground and sent a shower of sparks that would put most fireworks to shame. If the key is just in the run pos everything is fine.  :clueless: If I dont bypass the switch the car wont start.

the engine block becomes hot.

The Negative cable from the battery should be bolted to the left head. There is no way that the block should ever be HOT (positive).   This is what you're saying , right?

That is correct. I have the bat in the trunk now as the car is setup as a street strip car.

with the battery in the trunk I usually run a ground cable up to the tranny from the battery & runa battery cable to the body by the headlight ground from the engine block

Right.  Get a battery cable, eyed at both ends then run it from the frame to the engine block.  You are lucky that the copper gauge line didn't arc open, spray your exhaust, then burn your car to the ground.

I was at a gas station once, adding a quart of Mobile-1 to my dually Suburban.  It was spilling a little so I tried to quickly just jam the nozzle into the oil filler hole. Too much spilled on the exhaust manifold and the whole side of the engine compartment filled with oil fumes then next came the flames. Not just a small fire either. Luckily it was winter time and the station had pallets of washer fluid next to the pumps. I grabbed a bottle and dumped 1/2 of it on the fire, putting it out.  Had to think fast.  I went in and paid for a bottle of washer fluid.   The girl had seen the flames and hit the emergency button to kill all of the pumps. .

Thanks for the advice guys I will run a ground strap and let you know what happens. I don’t know why it just does it when I try to start it, does that make any kind of sense to you guys? (I do think that is what kept it from burning a hole in the copper tube).

That sounds like it was a pretty good time!!!! Good thing you can think on your feet that sounds like it could have gotten a lot worse REALLY fast.
