Car quits

This just started this morning as far as I know. For the last week the Cuda has been my daily driver, making trips to the part store, grocery store, half way to one car show and all the way to the one the next day. I noticed yesterday that my turn signals have stopped working. The emergency flashers flash really fast, but the turn signals just stay solid. Anywho, when I was checking the lights, I started the car and put it in neutral. After a few minutes it stopped running, no sputter and die, just died like I turned the key off. It's got lots of gas so I know that's not the problem.
When I let it sit for half an hour or so it starts without a problem again. The last time I tried it didn't start in neutral, but when I put it in first it started right up which must have been a coincidence because the next time it died that didn't work. I replaced most of the electronic ignition bits under the hood and replaced the big red wire through through the firewall.
I vaguely remember seeing something like this happening to somebody else but I can't find it now.

The coil can get hot and stop working.  After it cools off it will work again.  Have you replaced the coil or is it the one that was on the car when you got it?

I replaced the coil, plug wires, rotor, cap, ballast resistor and the voltage regulator. The only part I haven't replaced was the control module.
This only started today I think. My idle is really high at the moment, but I'm working on getting it down.

When it does it again, check and make sure you have spark.  If you don't then it could be the module.  You've replaced everything else.  What box is on it?  The orange one?  The quality of the orange boxes has gone down hill in the last few years.

Everything under the hood has been painted flat black. Wires, hoses, block, coil, cap so I don't know what color it is. The car has been sitting for about an hour now and it still won't start. I'll check for spark right now

I stuck an old plug in the number one wire and wedged it in my brake reservoir hold down and couldn't see any spark. It's tough to see since I don't have anyone close that I can call for help. I'll check again when it gets dark out and I can see any spark a little better. If I don't have spark tonight when it gets dark I'll run to the parts store tomorrow and grab a new module. Even if it isn't the problem it could probably use replacing anyway.

I have been stuck twice because of those dastardly orange boxes. What I find weird though, is that the ones I had were at least ten years old and never used?
Was quality an issue that far back?

I've put in the cheap blue lifetime warranty ones from O'reilly......seem to be ok for now. As for longevity, we shall see

turn the key to the run position & get the engine to crank over by shorting the 2 bolt terminals on the start relay & check for spark

I had a friend stop by last night and I got him to check for spark while I cranked. There was nothing, so I ordered a new module this morning and it should be here in a few hours.

I've replaced the ignition module a few minutes ago and I still don't have spark. I've checked all the wires for anything that looked strange or broken, but didn't find anything. I'm going to check the big red wire again, but I'm completely stuck now

My car is messing with my head. I took the plug off the ballast resistor that goes to the coil and put it back on and the car started first try. I really think there's a colony of gremlins living in the car that spend the night laughing at me


I went to grab a couple of packs of coffin nails and the car made it down the street before it died. I found the screw on my starter relay solenoid connection was loose so I tightened it up and the car started. Could this have been the problem? Just rattling loose after a few minutes to cause me grief. I noticed that the post seems to move around a little on the solenoid connection, so I think I'll be changing the relay next.

That could be it since that nut helps get the power to the fusible link.

But you weren't getting any spark.  When you have your ign switch in the start position, you are bypassing the balast resistor and going straight to the coil positive. so it wouldn't be your resistor. 

Another member had a bad capacitor on the plus side of the coil a while back. These were put on in a service bulletin to correct radio noise. Do you have one of these and did you pull it off yet?
