Shock length, blew up my KYB's ??BUGGER!
« on: August 05, 2010 - 09:19:59 AM »
Bugger! I had to adjust my front suspension by winding up the torsion bars so it would lift the headers off the ground to about 5" so I can pass licensing , min requirement is 100mm [ 4"] just finished doning the adjustment and I could hear a strange noise like fluid running.. sure enough burst one of the KYB shocks, oil everywhere!   :banghead: these are near new too, on the car when I got it the code no. is KG 4509 for a Duster I found out , they should be KG4510 for the Cuda.. Anyone know the size difference between the Cuda and Duster? I haven't wound the front up that much enough to see a gap between the fender and tyre, I would have thought close to standard height...?? No doesn't look like a gasser  :blah:

It's written in the MP chassis book. The Abody ones are shorter like 1/2" or something. I'd think you'd have to be overextending it all the time for that to really matter. You pulling the front wheels off the ground when launching?

I've blown out a few KYB's like that with oil all over. But they were well used.

I've got Hotchkis Bilsteins on it now. Rides smoother than the previous KYB's, Koni's, QA1's, Herb Adams VSE's I've run over the last 16 years.

Super-ouch. Call me ignorant, but I've never seen any shock do that little number.

That's awesome digger - now you have an excuse to get some decent shocks. No, seriously though - I have the Edelbrocks and we have some rough roads here and I can push the corners with barely a lean and no bounce if the road is rough in the corner. Only issue I have is the lack of steering response and the fact that I get horrible wander when travelling along the deep ruts semi's leave behind. So I have Hotchkis A arms coming for that.

I had the wrong (to short) of shocks on one of my mopes years ago. Never blew one out , but did destroy the the rubber gromets. They would go from being 'O's to 'U's and bang like crazy. Changed gromets twice before I figured out what the cause was.   :banghead:
