Falls off at high RPM....
« on: July 19, 2010 - 06:33:51 AM »
It's a 340 stroked to 416, Edelbrock 800 carb, Air Gap intake, makes about 460 HP & 510 Torque, ect....
When I stand on the gas (wide open), it pulls great up to 5500 rpm's, I shift to second and it falls on it's face as it gets to 500 rpm.....
It ran great on the dyno with no problem, but they used an MSD electrical box and an electric fuel pump....
We thought it was not getting enough gas, so I've done the following.
Cleaned carb and set floats
Switched to a 3/8'' pick up / sending unit
switched to a 3/8'' steel fuel line
added a 110 GPH Edelbrock (1720) mechanical fuel pump
new fuel filter
there is 3/8'' fuel line from the tank to the carb.
new battery
new voltage regulator & sanded firewall paint to ensure good ground
new alternator
Sanded paint on firewall behind orange Mopar electrical ignition box to ensure good ground

The only thing I have not replaced is the orange Mopar electrical ignition box..... I want to replace it, what should I buy??????
Any suggestions as to what's going wrong?

Sounds like you're still running out of gas. The fuel pump rod that rides on the cam and operates the fuel pump could be worn. I had the same problem a while back and that's what the problem was.

no fuel pump pushrod in a small block
with the stock ign system I would use the Mopar chrome box , adding a fuel pressure guage will quickly tell i f you are running out of fuel , aslo check the gap in the dist between the pick up coil & reluctor , it should be .008

My car did the same thing before I fuel injected it. I had to put in a rear mounted electric fuel pump and used the carter mechanical one up front for  pressure control, like the D.C. racing manual said to do.

Try a chrome box or even a stock replacement box to start(cheap easy to get), I'm running a 5/16 line and summit basic mech fuel pump with my stroker.  Pulls strong in all rpm ranges with my 770 Holley carb.  When you set the reluctor gap use a Brass feeler gauge not a steel one as I've read it will cause problems with the dist if you do.

I use an MSD with an MP dist fwiw.

If I put an electric fuel pump back by the gas tank, do I need a regulator or does the mechanical fuel pump act as the regulator in this case?
What pump should I use?
How do you wire something like that?

If you used something like the Holley BLUE pump, you need the regulator that is sold with it. If you use a lower volume pump like the Holley RED pump, it was okay with the bigger mechanical pumps like the Carter or Holley with the screws all the way around the diaphram.

I would run the regulator with either setup so that the pressure is adjusted to your setting, not theirs.

I got a chrome box sittn' on the shelf if you'd like to try it.  :dunno:   Lot's of choices for electric fuel pumps. I like the aeromotive stuff. Eddy is pretty cost effective.Jegs has one too.Need a regulator/plumbing. I've been thinking the same thing. Good luck with it.  R/T
