Car stereo goes out alot .... 71 challenger
« on: July 21, 2010 - 03:31:18 AM »
i have had 2 new batteries on my Challenger.... i thought that might have been the problem but now i see that is not the case...

for about 2 weeks the battery will be fine and everything will work great but then all of a sudden when i hit the turn signal my stereo cuts out for some reason then about 2 or 3 days later the battery will completely die on me and i then have to go to get the battery charges ... We did the  alternator check by pulling the battery cables and it works fine. m stuck.  Any ideas ???

if you could provide pictures along with your suggestions that would be very helpful....

Pull the red battery cable off and hook a 12 v bulb or test light BETWEEN the positive post and the positive cable. with the key off, the light should not come on at all. If it does, start unplugging fuses or connectors till the bulb goes off. The bigger the load or short, the bigger the light bulb you can use to light up.   Some devices like stereos and alarm systems will drain your battery over time so a small bulb may light up which is normal. If I park my car for more that 2 weeks, I disconnect the negative post completely with my quick disconnect clamp that everybody sells.

The only time that I ever leave my battery connected is if I will drive it the next day or it is parked outside and my alarm system is on.

I would try another alternator and/or voltage regulator. have you put a voltmeter across you battery to measure running voltage?
