gas gauge
« on: July 10, 2010 - 01:19:35 PM »
Since restoring  my Challenger, the gas gauge won't work. It didn't work the first time I started the car and then briefly worked on a short drive. Now its not working. I grounded the blue wire from the sending unit, and I got a reading from the gauge, although it didn't read full as some members had indicated that it should. Is it the sending unit or is the sending unit not grounded properly.

Sounds like a partial ground. Try running a wire from the blue sender wire directly to the neg post on the battery and see what happens.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

if you get no reading through the sender but the guage reads grounding the wires the sending unit is the problem

Replaced the sending unit yesterday and put a new ground strap on the fuel line and the gauge still won't work. I did ground the blue wire and I got a reading from the gauge. Not sure what to try now..

When you ground that blue wire on the sending unit, your gauge should not only go to full, but a bit past that. It sounds like that isn't the case for you. If your temp. gauge is fine, I suspect your fuel gauge isn't working correctly.

I ground the b lue wire to the battery and it did go over the full line. Maybe I have a bad ground?

How are the temp & oil pressure gauges doing?....If they are having problems you may have a voltage limiter or other power supply problem. If not them it's possible for the wiring that runs from the sending unit back to the fuel gauge has issues, maybe why grounding it did not put the gauge to full.
