RIVET OR WELD?

WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK .IVE GOTTEN INPUT FROM OTHER PEOPLE,SOME TO WELD IN MY QUARTERS,
OTHERS SAY I CAN RIVET CHEAPER.I DONT KNOW ,CUZ, FORTUNATELY IVE NEVER HAD QUARTER TROUBLES BEFORE.ALSO I DONT UNDERSTAND HOW ID RIVET THEM ON WITHOUT THEM LOOKING BULKY.
MY UNCLE SAID SOMETHING ABOUT YOU HAVE TO COUNTER SINK THEM.DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT HE MEANS?

Burpin is not a bodyman by any means of the word. But, I saw a program once and they said to do it right and correct you have to remove the entire quarter panel at the pinch weld and replace the entire thing. And that would take back just like original. but if you dont do that then I say always weld. rivits may not hold it tight and what if they pop.

Yeah I'm with Burpin, I don't think I'd rivot any panels on a car I liked.
Rivots are your friend if it comes to rusty floor boards and you could give a crap.
As far as countersinking goes, your uncle means you will actualy cut a recess just small enough for the head of the rivot to sit in and not stick out past flush of the body panel like you are thinking. Not a bad thought, but not realy the right way either.

Again, it depends, if it's a track car and it don't matter rivot away. But if you are trying for a good looking driver or even someday the Autorama I'd weld.

Riviting on a nice car is not an option. you'll end up with multiple problems if you go that route. If you don't want to weld in the new quarter skins, and I don't blame you, there are adhesive products that have been developed just for this purpose. In fact, collision centers are now using this technology as opposed to welding. You would flange the existing metal on the car and place the quarter skin into the flanged area. The flanged area would be where you put the adhesive. The seam would then be filled with Duraglass or something similar. The repair will be very strong and permanent.

I would never rivet a panel on except just to hold the panel while welding,even then i use sheet metal screws. Rivets, cannot be grinded down smooth,which means a lot of bondo will need to be used and a funky looking body line. Rivets open up the oppertunity for moisture to get in and start rusting out your new panel. Im sure after a month or so you will be able to see all those riverts come through, just if you were to bondo over a hole, It will sink in and leave a divit. .
The only way I would reccomend putting a quater panel on would be completely butt welding it, then grinding smooth. In the end, you will need to use little filler and have a 1 solid piece of metal.
The only way to rivert the panel on also would be to over lap, i cant even think of how much of a hack job that would turn out to be. Butt weld... just my opinion

well............We are going to Glue my quarters in i've talked to many body men that have used the stuff and said it holds just as good or better than welds and you have no warpage with the glue...you need to do a trial run with the glue get your quarter lined up drill holes and put these screws in that swell up make sure your body lines are good then take the screws out and apply the glue stick the screws back in and your body lines should be perfect. and they are a special type of screw (dont' know if they are an actual screw or not)  they you can make them shrink then when you stick them in they swell up i dont' know what they are called.  but they have no head so you don't have to grind or anything and don't have to use alot of bondo.  just what i've been told.

MY BROTHER COULD WELD THEM IN BUT WON'T CUZ ,IT'S A MOPAR.HE'S A DIE HARD GM MAM .I CAN'T EXPLAIN THIS MY DAD RAISED US ON  CHRYSLER PRODUCTS.MY DAD REBUILT A 68 BEE MAN IT WAS SWEET .THEN A 72 PLYMOUTH SAT ,WHICH NOW HE HE TRYING TO PART OUT.WELL' ANYWAY FELLOWS THANKS 4 EVERYTHING.BUT DON'T WORRY,I ASKED EVEN MORE DUMB STUFF CUZ  THIS E BODY IS UNKNOWN TERRITORY TO ME.

mopar muscle had a glue on quarter in the NOV 2002 I think the one with the FM3 challenger on the front, the kit was through eastwood

looks like it works and its supposted to be easier than welding, id weld but if it a 73 dart and your practicing it might not be a bad idea, weld an e body

that was my buddy Jeff Cox that put those quaters on the challenger. that was an old issue!
