Paint question
« on: August 08, 2010 - 02:41:43 PM »
I am spraying my new fenders to match the rest of the car in PPG Concept Urethane.  I have sprayed the inside and around the edges.  The color seems a bit dark but it has only been 2 hours since i sprayed.   Will it lighten up as it dries?  It was mixed at the same place that mixed it the first time.  I am trying to not have to blend into doors and hood.   Can the paint shop lighten this paint up or do they need to mix from new?  Can i change it by changing reducer amounts?

Color matching can be difficult sometimes.  If you have a factory color and it looks like you do, the paint supply store should be able to match it really close.  However, it is very difficult for them to match exact. :2cents:

Color matching can be tricky but a good paint guy/shop should get you real close.A solid color is much easier than a mettalic and pearls and candys are even harder.Best bet is to take off a piece of the car like a mirror, trunk lid or valance and bring it to them so they can tint the paint you have to match. If you have a good eye they might give you  little jars of the tints so you can fine tune it by spraying a test panel.

To answer your question, the paint will not lighten in color anytime soon, it may take 10+ years, but then the old paint will loose some color too. Usually you should be able to adjust color with existing paint you already had mixed, as it's been said ,solid colors are alot easier to match than metallics.Just make sure when matching, try matching it to the doors or hood, not a deck lid or a mirror,

don't change reducer ratio.  It has to be mixed according to the PPG tech sheets.

because door and hood are the closest panel to the fenders, and you want the fenders to match adjacent panels, not a mirror or deck lid
