Is there an easy way to change fluid ?
« on: July 21, 2010 - 02:58:25 AM »
Even dropping the sump still leaves a load of fluid up inside.

Is there a good way to get it all out? like can you pump it out of the cooler line or something ? like a blood transfusion.

I used a vacuumpump to suck?? oil out via the coolerlines. Got a liter or 2 out
but like you said there's still more from where it comes from. :banghead:

There are Trans Flush machines that are a 1to1 type set up meaning that one quart of old fluid comes out and one quart of new goes back in at most shops nowadays...These are a bit pricey for the average machanics home shop at around $4K, but I would think any trans shop should be able to do this for you for around $150.00 or so for synthetic fluid flush...

Unfortunately, there's now way to do this yourself, unless you dump about a case of fluid through the trans with the feed line off the cooler run into a bucket or something and flushed till it was red or until you're happy with it..

Had my front end elevated last time I had the pan off, seems that the cooler & lines drained out, then I found the drain bolt on the converter & got some more there.

Drop the pan,change the filter,
Reinstall the pan
Add 4 qts of fluid
Take the rear cooler line off ,
Put a hose on the line pointed in a bucket,
start the car up in neutral, keep adding fluid thru the filler tube till it comes out of the hose clean
hook the cooler line back up,top off the trans idling in neutral

Thanks Terry, I thought there should be a way.

When you say to take off the rear line and point it into a bucket I assume that means the end coming from the radiator goes into the bucket, otherwise I guess it would not change the fluid in the cooler lines - right ?

In other words, if I'm getting this right, the fluid flows out of the trans through the front line, goes round the radiator (and any other cooler), and then goes back along the rear line into the pan (or into the bucket in this case).

I'm asking about this stuff because, although my trans. works really good, my fluid looks/smells a bit foggy and old, so I want to change it all out whilst disturbing as little else as possible.

You got it!
Just an FYI,the returning cooled fluid does not go to the pan,it goes to lubricate the bushings and stuff inside the trans.

Thanks Terry I thought that most autos just dumped the returned oil in the pan but don't remember seeing the return hole when I last serviced the 904 in my Challenger.   :working:
