optimum back spacing for a 7" front wheel?

Seems like it should be 4", but, I recall seeing 4.25" elsewhere. :)

4" is right. Some measure to the outside lip and get 4-1/4.  Backspacing is usually measured to the inside edge where the tire seats. Stick with 4" and you'll be fine.

No problem.   Just be aware that alot of these aftermarket wheels have a 3-5/16" backspacing and if you put on a 235-60-15 on one of those, your tire will rub the fender around turns and  while turning into the "driveway bump"  I run the 15x7 Rallye with a 235-60 in the front and it never rubs anything. I had the 3-5/16s before and HATED them.

But I like my cars low though. The tops of my tires are inside the fender and not jacked up like some of these guys have them.

that much offset also puts a pretty good load on the outer bearing
