Changing gears on the pig?
« on: July 30, 2010 - 07:55:06 PM »
I've got a nice pig that was built by Dr. Diff, he changed it to posi / sure grip. I may want to go from my 323 to a 391, how hard is it to change the gears?

difficult , I do not know what carrier you have but you need special tools & a press to set the pinion depth , the ring gear is realtively easy to swap

To make things "Easier", you'd be better off finding another "Chunk" (pig), with 3.91's and swapping the entire set up...As stated, swapping gears is best left to the people that know what they are doing...BTW: As long as you aren't running a 500 Stroker with a 4 -speed or something, I have a 3.91 Sure Grip "Chunk" for sale..It's the light duty unit (741) if interested.

You didn't mention what case you have...I will have a set of 3.91's out of a 489 case for sale in about a week. I am going to 3.23's.

My pig is a 742, I would like to buy a chunk with 391 gears in it. How tough / durable is the 741? Is the 489 stronger than the 741? I've 460 HP at the crank, I have a 727 trans.....I plan to go to the drag strip 4 or 5 times a year, would the 489 or 741 hold up?

"Glennster", PS, Your inbox is full...I needed money for Carlisle at this price, but am willing to sell it for $400.00.....As long as you run the automatic, you should be good, as I've run as fast as 6.80's (8th mile), with a 505 C.I. stroker Big Block on a "741" carrier, 3.91 Sure Grip unit and never had a problem..It's the Shock load that kills rears....
