best ebody shocks for 17" or higher wheels

The main application to vote on is for a '70 Cuda convertible; street-ability and 17" for larger wheels.  Want to remove the bone crushing affect that these larger wheels cause.  This is regarding regular tires; NOT low profile tires.  Cost shouldn't be a concern with your choice.  Please include your facts and opinions if you are so inclined. :thumbsup:

I may be wrong, but I think if you are going 17" you probably can't put much meat back there. The thing is, regardless of what shock you use, if the tire is low profile, you will shake your fillings loose. 

If you already have these wheels, what shocks are on there now?

I have KYB's and love them. Others say Bilstein.

I still have the 14's on there.  Just thinking ahead.

Are most 17's 'low profile' tires that fit under there?

If you increase your rim size, you effectively reduce your sidewall height.  Its typical to run between 40-50 series tires with 17".  40 and 45 series is most common.

the BONE CRUSHING effects is not normally associated with just sidewall height.

I ran low profile tires on my 79 Diplomat that I autocrossed.  I could run any size tire on the stock wheel size.  Because I was in stock class, I couldn't change spring rates.  The car's ride didn't change.  However, the car handled much better because I had so much less tire deflection.  With stock tires, I could do a certain traffic circle at about 35mph before I started to under-steer.  Just the change of tires made it up to 55mph.  But I could still drive it anywhere and it was a cozy cruiser.

Shocks become important once you go above and beyond stock torsion bars.  If you aren't upgrading those, you probably won't need new shocks.

All that being said, I'm currently planning on going from 1" t-bars (with stock shocks, rides nice until you hit) to 1.22" bars.  I'll be running either Bilsteins or Konis.  I plan on trying the bilsteins first based on some recommendations here.

I've run every handling shock on that list plus one on my 68 Barracuda in the past 16 years/80K miles. That Moroso is a drag shock and shouldn't be included.

My car had .99 T-bars with a rate of 200 lbs/in. vs. 110 lbs/in stock. A .99/1.00" A-body torsion bar is about 10% stiffer than a 1" E-body torsion bar. It had stock 340 rear leafs and poly bushings, and 245/50/15 Z rated low profile tires.

I've also ran Herb Adams VSE front shocks. Blew those out in a couple years.

The Koni, QA1, Herb Adams VSE, and KYB would pull you down and the seat buckles when you hit a pavement separation. KYB was the worst. Now I just added 1.14 T-bars with a 350 lbs/in rate. !! 3 TIMES stock stiffness :o  I thought it was going to ride really rough. But the Hotchkis Bilstein's tamed these mondo wrist-sized T-bars and the ride actually seems a little smoother than before. And none of the yanking feeling on the seat belts.

I was amazed at the ride difference that the Bilsteins made on my car with 1" t bars.  It is smoother than ever.  My Cuda only has 15" wheels on it though.  My Chevelle has 17" wheels and super stiff springs and the Bilsteins really make for a decent ride in that car too.  After seeing the increase in both comfort and handling, I will be using them in all my cars. :2cents:

Sorry no recommendation, but I do have a question.  Did you rule out Edelbrock shocks and if so why?  I've got a set to go onto my Barracuda and will be putting them on with original front & rear E-body sway bars.  I've heard these can be stiff, but was thinking they should still be OK with the otherwise 'original' springs, T bars, sway bars, etc.  Just wondered if you'd considered the Edys.

No I didn't.  I didn't even know that the Moroso's were for drag until a Responder advised here.  Maybe someone with experience with them responds here.

I went from kyb's to qa1's and once I got the setting dialed in its a better ride.
