340 hp, I'm shocked!
« on: August 27, 2010 - 06:43:54 PM »
I took my car to the dyno last week and was shocked by what I got for hp and trq. HP was 227 and Torque was 253.  Stock pistons, .030 over with stock heads, 670 avenger, RPM intake, MSD ignition, 727 tran. and headers. 4.10 gears I would have thought the car would have put down bigger numbers.

Is there a chance the torque converter is slipping or am I right on with the number it posted?

Sure wasn't what I was hoping for.........

Probably pretty close to right, considering those are net/net numbers. Net one, that is with all accessories, as run condition, with all associated parasitic loss. Net two, you were dealing with the atmosphereic conditions at hand rather than ideal circumstances and it is August which means the air is far from ideal.

Where I'm at, 180 rwhp from a stock built 440 is considered average, so it all depends.

   :banghead:

Some day I should get glasses.    :sadwavey:

You can definitely bump up your numbers. Ported heads , a bigger carb...  What is the stall of your torque converter?

Best net hp for a stock 340 was 290,I think, so unless you made some mods to increase it this is about right for a rear wheel....You limited the top end with a smallish carb but for the street you may have helped.

It is a 340, sorry about that.  I bought a set of 308 heads that I'll have ported and 2.02 valves added.  I'm looking to change the cam as well, currently it's a comp 224/230 @.050 with 477/480 lift.  I'm thinking something like the Mopar 292/292 with 509 lift. But afraid it won't give me much more than I have now.  Still want it to be able to go anywhere on any day.

As far as heads go you might be better off starting w/ the LA-X heads from hughes, their flow numbers start unported where your heads will be at after you have them bowl hogged, 3 angled and port matched.
As far as the cam is concerned I used a MP 509/292 in my 340 and it was a beast to tune and very tempermental. When It was on the song it was strong thou. But I think you can get better drivabilty and power from a lunati voodoo or a comp xtreme energy. Another way to free up some horsepower would be to lighten up your drivetrain, engine internals, upgrading exhaust pipe diameter roller rockers, etc, really comes down to just how much time and money you are willing to throw at it.:working:

In the spec's you said that you had 4.10 gears so numbers should be up slightly, a manual box would have given slightly higher numbers also. If you were using 3.55 or 3.23 the numbers would have been lower.  :2cents:
