you need an oil that is NOT rated SM so it has enough ZDDP to keep the cam alive

How many ppm (parts per million) phosporus and zinc do you need in your engine oil for a 440 Big Block for street use, and which Mobil 1 Synthetic is the right one to use?

From the pdf chart, for Mobil 1 10W30 Synthetic it lists phosphorus at 800 ppm and zinc at 900 ppm.

At the bottom of the pdf chart - racing oils - For race only and not recommended for street use, it is listed as phosphorus 1750 ppm and zinc 1850 ppm.

15W50 (1200 ppm Phosphorus, 1300 ppm Zinc)

Lighter weight oils (10-30, etc) are now reduced in zinc and phosphorous content.  That leaves you with heavier oils and racing oils for the most part.  As stated above, stay away from SM rated oils.

If you look at the Mobil 1 chart, you will notice that the 15-50 is okay for a street engine.  Most legit experts seem to believe that 12-13 ppm is what it takes for reasonable spring rates on a flat tappet cam.  High spring rates for big cams probably need more.

Somewhere around 18 ppm, one begins to be in danger of pitting from the zddp according to some engineers and oil should be changed very frequently...which one would do on a race engine, anyway.

If you do a little research, you will find there are quite a few oils on the market these days with sufficient content to avoid the need for supplements.

Valvoline Racing, Brad Penn green, Joe Gibbs racing, Castrol for classics, Mobil 1 15-50, Royal Purple racing, and a number of others fit the bill.  A little research will show you which ones are okay and which are lacking amongst the brands

What about GM EOS (Engine Oil Supplement) as an additive?
Will that work?

http://www.turbobuick.com/forums/general-turbo-buick-tech/180776-gm-engine-oil-supplement-eos-question-2.html

That old EOS part number 1052367 has been replaced by #88862586. Same old formula as the old stuff. Still plenty of Zinc in there to keep your cam happy.

If you would rather buy a supplement than an oil that has enuf...you can do so...

One thing about buying an oil that is formulated by the company is that the additive package is balanced so that the detergents and the zddp work together thru out the life of the oil.

Lotsa people figure that if a little is good, more must be better, and dump in EOS or one of the other supplements....certainly, if you wish to use an oil that is low on zddp, and you have a flat tappet cam, you are going to be better off by doing so.

I have no experience with the Penn 20-50w but check the label if it is SL it should be fine if it is SM it will not have enough ZDDP , oil with Zddp or an additive will work , as I said before most racing oils have a lower detergent level & are designed to be changed more often , exactly how often I am not sure

I pulled the cork from the 440 oilpan, and put in Mobil 1 15W50 Synthetic Oil. Couldn't find any of the other brands of oil locally, or even the zddp additives, as no one knew what I was talking about! Some of the parts counter guys said, we have people ask for it occasionally but we don't sell it.
Even some of the mechanics seem quite vague and don't know about it.

the info I have sates 1500-1600 PPM is minimum for flat tappet engines
not sure how much protection EOS adds
Comp cams has a break in additive recommended for continual use
